I've been sick, so it wasn't much of a lecture (actually, class went over period and better than I expected), but a large part of the focus today was developing research questions out of existing literature and filtering out the stuff that doesn't help formulate or answer the question.

Are you confusing George RR Martin with Robert Jordan? GRRM was always going to have a 6 volume series - his problem was with #4 - way too long, so he split it in two. RJ was going to after 3, then 4, then whenever the hell he felt like it. Then he died last September after spending time up PZ's way (Mayo Clinic). After finding out he had a rare form of blood cancer, he starting picking up the pace in his books from glacial to somewhat readable, but he left the series unfinished. His wife/publisher is now completing the final (!) book from his dictated notes. I've read both & GRRM is the far better read. I have all RJ's books thanks to my library's discards fire sale and when you spend 1000+ pages to describe a single frikkin day, it's time to pack it in. Actually saw a copy of this (high price) at the San Francisco Virgin Records, so it's out there (quick check on Amazon.com shows it too). It's a film from the Canadian Denys Arcand, his latest being "Les, invasions barbares (The Barbarian Invasion)". I also watched as an undergrad, but, found it myself, just flipping channels.

I Googled for a few statistically improbable phrases chosen at random, and quickly found another sixteen similar instances scattered across blogs as varied as Bruce Schneier's security blog and a discussion of tofu recipes. The rants are different, ranging in size from ~10,000 to ~60,000 words in the small sample I looked at (this one, at 88,000 words, seems to be at the high end of the distribution). They appear to be assembled from a stockpile of weird chunks; I have not tried to isolate components or determine their size distribution. If he's interested, perhaps Schwa's brother (#103) could do some analysis, and report back. It's an interesting phenomenon, and I don't recall anyone commenting on it before, although I found examples going back as far as April 2006.
