Behind Curtains

I was trying to view a tamil magazine website. The scrawny bouncers at the door of Sloppy Coders Paradise stop me with a message: "Use Internet Explorer only please". Huh, my firefox fingers bristle at the affront. Still I am not unduely surprised. I was aware the website was probably the work of a web development company with moderate to sloppy software skills. Oh well. Alright, perhaps the website will have some redeeming quality in its content. I use IE and enter. The moment I step in, the website asks me to install a particular tamil font. Well, I pause a moment to consider if I should…
Look to the left under Suggestions. The suggestions were shamelessly copied from Kenny Craig, the hypnotist in Little Britain (My three year old niece calls it the Vomit Show). I have Senegal Fast Food on the wishlist, if you are feeling charitable today.
Yours truly will be away from the blog this week, makin money and all. While am away, here's something to think about. Fake fights on Climate crisis. Alan Thorpe writes in New Scientist.Scepticism is one thing; cynicism and conspiracy-theorising are quite another. These are the hallmarks of a recent attempt to discredit the widely accepted theory that human-made carbon dioxide emissions are causing global warming. A loose affiliation of scientists and writers is pushing the alternative idea that fluctuations in solar activity provide a better explanation for the rise and fall in the…
If you spend a lot of time peering into a window that opens into the World Wide Web, you may like using Verdana font set at a comfortable font size. I personally have set Firefox to ignore all site specific fonts and just use Verdana size 18 for all western fonts. I've heard that Verdana is a poor choice as a web font for various reasons. I am not an expert on that but I know what I see and I see Verdana working well. My screen resolution is 1400 x 1050, the system is Microsoft Windows with ClearType installed. If you run Windows, install ClearType. It's one of the genuinely good things to…
I hope to move TheScian.com to a new host over this weekend. Sit tight. I am also hoping to make some changes to the site. All in the coming weeks. First the move, though. Update: Alright. We've moved TheScian.com. On the way we lost some weight. Kitchen is closed. Many thanks for those who dropped by over the months. I have a copy of the sql dump if you want to nibble. What else..yes. Melt is over. It was good while it lasted. We'll do something else. Make a suggestion.
The panelists rankings are in. I need to average them out and publish the results. A lot of personal things to attend to at the moment and haven't got time to blog. Hang on a couple of days for the contest winners announcement. I still haven't got internet access at home. Typing this from the local library. Doh.
So, what's keeping me from blogging? Two things really. Firstly, we moved to a new house over the weekend. It's a bigger and better house. The move has taken all my time and has also put my back through a wringer. Secondly, I've got no internet at the new house. That'll take a few more days to arrive. Trying to get British Telecom to move it's lazy rear to provide us a phone connection (for DSL) has been a herculean task. Anyway, all shall be well soon. Your patience is, of course, much appreciated.
Yours truly is travelling to his beloved country early morning today for three weeks (real early, am sleepless in amersham). Expect a short break at this blog for the next few days. I'll make the odd post from Namakkal and provide you with a glimpse of the southern country with my newly minted Sony camera. If you are hanging about in Chennai, you can spot me at Shaastra. I'll be there on Saturday night and Sunday morning. I am quite thrilled to have Mark Twain in my bag. A couple of books of his to enliven the trip. So long.
I haven't faced it. But if you have, this discussion at Pharyngula would fill you in. I use NoScript plugin for Firefox and usually swat all scripts without mercy.
Apparently, I had screwed up the feed burner feed here. My bloglines subscription for this blog was showing no signs of activity for the past few days. It's fixed now.
