Princeton, Minnesota, about five miles north of Zimmerman and thirty or so miles north of me, is the site of a rather odd event. Three "suspicious packages" were found around town, one by the post office, one at the high school, and one at the public utilities building. The schools are being closed, and the packages are being investigated. I'm trying to find out if this happens to be homecoming week in Princeton... UPDATE: Yes, it is homecoming week...
The Roman Polanski story has certainly gotten interesting. Well, actually, the story is still only mildly interesting, but the discussion about it has developed in interesting ways. So, I thought I'd muddy the waters by throwing in a few thoughts. This is one of those situations where people have started judging each other on their opinions. Don't even think about doing that with me. I have not actually formulated an opinion so you'd be wasting your time and mine. The LA authorities, Polanski's lawyers, none of those involved, have contacted me about my opinion, and I'm not influencing…
According to Google, this is what wave (which is OpenSource) is: A wave is equal parts conversation and document. People can communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more. A wave is shared. Any participant can reply anywhere in the message, edit the content and add participants at any point in the process. Then playback lets anyone rewind the wave to see who said what and when. A wave is live. With live transmission as you type, participants on a wave can have faster conversations, see edits and interact with extensions in real-time. And here's the…

I discussed the Hendrickson Incident here (and now Josh Henderson has come to Quiche Moraine to defend himself from the Hippies from Uptown) but I had missed, until Hendrickson himself pointed it out to me, this coverage from the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence. To see Hendrickson's response, and some great "examples" of the use of "quotation" marks, here's Henderson's "blog" post on the matter. I suggest you put on a pair of these before visiting Josh's site.

An international team of researchers, including Monash University biochemists, has discovered evidence at the molecular level in support of one of the key tenets of Darwin's theory of evolution. ... that it happened ... Trevor Lithgow said the breakthrough, funded by the Australian Research Council and published recently in the prestigious journal PNAS, provides a blueprint for a general understanding of the evolution of the "machinery" of our cells. "Our cells, and the cells of all organisms, are composed of molecular machines. These machines are built of component parts, each of which…
You may know that much of the climate change on earth over the last two million years-the coming and going of ice ages-is caused by the "orbital geometry" of the planet. The amount of planetary tilt and the time of year the tilt occurs change over time. When the Northern Hemisphere is less tilted towards the sun on June 21st, and at the same time the Earth is as far from the sun in its elliptical orbit as it ever gets, ice age conditions prevail. This makes ice ages on Earth pretty regular, cyclic, events.... ... Read the rest of this amazing blog post here!!!!

Do not watch this if you can't handle geeks wearing viking hats.
When the wind stiffens it blows the fog off the lake and replaces it with a biting spray. And when the wind slackens the sound of air rushing though the leaves and around the cabins is replaced with the crashing of the white caps that stand off from the more protected bay. Either way it is chilly and inhospitable, with ambient temperatures near 40 and a wind chill that might be close to freezing. In other words, a perfect day at the lake. This is the perfect weather if you want to be alone, or at least, not dragged into the obnoxious loud fantasy of some motor head's idea of nature, or…
Here at The Lake I don't get enough intertubules to watch a video reliably. So I can't separate the DJ effect from the Slow Connection effect in this video, but it looks good:
The Cuban Rapper AL2 of the bad Los Aldeanos has been arrested by the Cuban Police, and released. Meanwhile, some of his personal effects including a computer were confiscated. Rappers are considered very dangerous by the Cuban government. You may recall a major bust up of a concert there a few weeks ago. I think this arrest was not entirely unexpected. The following is a statement from very close to the source of the events that that was sent to me by Emetrece for your information. Statement from La Aldea regarding the arrest of AL2 (Los Aldeanos) At this time, La Aldea is confirming…
The scientific evidence is overwhelming and unequivocal, climate change is a stark reality. It is largely caused by human activities and it presents very serious global risks for people and biodiversity around the world and it demands an urgent global response. Human activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels, are releasing rapidly increasing levels of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide. This is causing the atmosphere to heat up. We do not have the luxury of standing by for years before the world gets round to making a serious attempt to cut its emissions. The next few years will…
