I find this 1950s-era needle book cover fascinating, because it mixes the stereotypically female activity of sewing with the stereotypically male interest in space travel. What is the connection here? Are these young women sewing spacesuits? Are they inspired by/chatting about the excitement of rocket science? Is there any tenuously plausible connection that can be made between a space ship named "The Moon" and sewing needles, other than that they are both silver? View larger image Ha! It turns out we can't even make that connection, because a closer look at the packaging reveals that the…

Today, we move to our new home at Discover Blogs: http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/intersection While we have immensely enjoyed being a part of Scienceblogs, we've decided together that it is time to move on. Our tremendous thanks go out to Seed for hosting The Intersection since 2006 where we've been honored to share the network with such an esteemed community of bloggers--many of whom have become good friends. While we're excited to join Carl, Phil, and Sean, it is a bittersweet decision as we will miss the Sb 'family' tremendously. Of course, we will never be far--the blogosphere has no…
Funny! From Jimmy Fallon: Last night, Michael Showalter (from Stella, Wet Hot American Summer, The State, your dreams) made a cameo on the show. He and our head writer, A.D. Miles, played a couple of Columbia grad students on spring break. Things got pretty scandalous! Really funny... but totally off base. It's more like Girls Gone Wild... I promise! -via everyday scientist-

Straight from XKCD... I had this exact same reaction. Now that we're on the topic. I don't like federal money going to pay bonuses but seriously... this money was promised long ago and it's already been given out. Using the tax code to take it back? Wow this is seriously a real cluster @#$!
Near Cruz de Eje, Argentina Tomorrow I leave for three ant-filled weeks in northern Argentina. Don't despair, though, the Myrmecos Blog will not go into remission.  Scott Powell will be taking the reins for the rest of the month, and Eli Sarnat will drop in once or twice to regale us with shocking-but-true ant adventures from the South Pacific.  I've also pre-scheduled a few Friday Beetles and Sunday Movies. We've got several goals for the expedition.  First, Jo-anne and I are trying to get a better sense of the biology of the closest relatives of the Argentine ant Linepithema humile.…
tags: Tallinn Estonia, travel, photography, Europe Tallinna sadam, Eesti Vabariik (The Port of Tallinn, Estonia). Image: Ralf Roletschek (Wikipedia) [larger view]. I am SO EXCITED! As if spending three glorious weeks in Helsinki, Finland isn't enough, I will be visiting Eesti Vabariik, or Estonia, tomorrow. I will arise at the buttcrack of dawn and travel by ferry from Helsinki to Tallinn, a two hour ride. According to my sources, the ferry has a free wireless connection, although I don't know if there are any outlets available (but it seems reasonable that there would be), so I might be…
The Continental Divide runs north-south from Alaska to northwestern South America. It separates waters flowing into the Pacific Ocean from those flowing into the Atlantic or Gulf of Mexico. We stopped in New Mexico to document traversing this natural boundary...
The process of choosing a medical specialty, and applying for residency programs is nearly complete as I have returned from my tour of the West Coast and am nearly done with interview season. This is when medical students travel the country at great (and unreimbursed) expense to find their future training program. When all is said and done, all your research into programs and time spent interviewing boils down to a simple question. Do you want to work with these people for the next 3-7 years of your life? It's also nice to see the cities where you may live and get a feel for the type of…
Greetings from Chester, founded in AD 79, whither I'm come to accept a position as Visiting Research Fellow with the university's archaeology department. Inclement weather delayed my flight, but the taxi driver who took me into town was a clement man and we had a nice chat. I have located my friend Howard Williams and my room on campus, and I expect to have a login for the ambient wifi there soon. Wifi is not a common offering in UK cafés though -- took me a while to find one that had it among the quaint shops of central Chestah. Have started to make friends with the staff and faculty, and…
