Finnish Lawn Ornaments. Chilean Flamingos, Phoenicopterus chilensis, Korkeasaari (Helsinki Zoo). Image: GrrlScientist, 20 November 2008 [larger view]. What have I done and seen so far in Helsinki? So far, I've; visited the Korkeasaari (Helsinki Zoo), where, among other things, I watched endangered Przewalski's horses actively working at increasing their tiny population -- and no, I did not photograph that, but it sure was tempting! met some of my host's friends over beers .. many many beers ... had beers on the SS Hyöky, oddest quaintest little boat-bar/museum I've ever visited (yes…

Image: GrrlScientist, 1 September 2008 [larger view]. The day after Nature's European ScienceBlogging Conference had concluded, I set out to photograph the city with my friend and colleague, Bob O'Hara, and then to attend a play at the Globe Shakespeare Theatre. This photoessay details our Globe Theatre experience. After roaming around London, taking photographs and drinking beers at a variety of historical pubs, Bob and I walked across…

This museum is affiliated with the University of Helsinki and is located in an old Russian gymnasium. Image: Wikipedia [larger view]. As the title says, one month from today, I will be on an eight-and-a-half hour flight from NYC to Helsinki, Finland! I will be there for eight days and I am very excited! Even though I am of Finnish ancestry, I know exactly nothing about Finland, so I am asking you, the experts, about what I should plan to see and do while I am there. So…
I'm still sequestered somewhere away from Mystery City, working madly on grant proposals and spending some quality time with my family. How are these things co-existing? Not so well. But at least it's pretty here. But anyways, I wanted to offer to send my dear blog readers a postcard from our mystery destination. Anyone who wants a postcard from our scenic destination just needs to drop me an email (science dot woman at google's mail service) by the end of the day on Monday. I can't promise that postcards will actually be postmarked from the vacation (and they may even postdate the submittal…

When I was in Seattle, several friends and I visited the Ballard Farmer's Market (part one and part two) in the morning and then went wine tasting at a nearby wine bar in the afternoon. I was so fascinated by the Ballard Farmer's Market that Shannon could barely rip me (and my camera!) away. But the promise of free wine did the trick. We walked down the street and went into a wine bar where Shannon knows a lot of people, and we sampled their…

This afternoon the Science family loaded up our car and headed off on an adventure. We'll be out of town for 8 (!) days, but I may have sporadic internet access, as this is a working vacation for me. Below the fold, I've posted a photo of my packing list (and progress so far). Feel free to guess where we're going in the comments. Who knows, I may even tell you if you're right. Click the link to go to Flickr page to embiggen. It's actually a good thing I took the photo and posted it to Flickr, because Minnow decided to scribble all over the list partway through the packing process. I had to…

About 20 Science bloggers and readers met at the North Carolina Zoo yesterday for a day of animals and fun. Minnow was the youngest, but not the only, child in attendance. And I think she was quite happy to meet some other children-of-bloggers, particularly the 22-month-old son of James Hrynyshyn. They can have their own meet-up in a few years and commiserate. Pictures and details below the below the fold. The group with their backs to the gorillas, who had their backs to us. The animal highlight of the day came at the elephant enclosure. We happened to arrive at feeding time and got to see…
Every now and then, people hire me to travel places and give workshops for college instructors and teachers on using bioinformatics. In a couple of weeks, I'll go to Long Branch, NJ. This week, I went to Corpus Christi, Texas and gave two workshops at Del Mar College; one on using Cn3D to understand protein DNA structure, and another on using BLAST to identify the source of unknown DNA sequences. Del Mar College has a beautiful science facility, with an amazing assortment of fancy high tech equipment. The workshops were fun and I enjoyed seeing the student posters showcasing work on the…

Sunday, the day after the Nature Network Science Blog conference was over, Mike, Mo and I caught a train to Bromley, England, where we toured Darwin's Down House and Gardens and walked along the famous Sandwalk that Darwin once walked. This is part three of my photoessay series about Down House, where I focus on…
