Appealing to the base

Rick Santorum's political base has been shrinking rapidly. His approval numbers are in the sewer, and he's down by double-digits in the polls. Santorum's campaign skills, however, are well respected. He knows how to motivate his base, and how to get people to the polls. Just the other day, he demonstrated exactly why he's such a highly regarded campaigner, coming out with an innovative new method for motivating the -ing insane demographic. All you need to do there is show that you are one of them.

There is a joke expression about surgeons, "sometimes wrong, never in doubt." Depending on how you feel about surgeons I've heard it begin "sometimes right" and "even when wrong." Applied to Rick Santorum, I think it has to be "usually wrong" if not "always wrong" given the serious of ridiculous…
If the polls are accurate, Senator Rick Santorum is about to lose his re-election bid. That's a good thing. Santorum is a bad cliche of the culture wars, a powerful politician who actually believes that the earth is 6,000 years old, that abortion is tantamount to murder and the Catholic church…

Even among politicians, Santorum stands out for his opportunism and lack of principle. I first heard his name in connection with a PETA-proposed animals rights bill around a dozen years ago, which he sponsored in the Senate. OTOH, five years ago it was him who tried to slip the anti-evolution clause into the No Child Left Behind act. The guy's either completely amoral, or so stupid he doesn't read proposed bills before submitting them to the Senate. How did Pennsylvania ever get stuck with him in the first place?

How did Pennsylvania ever get stuck with him in the first place?

There's Philadelphia at one end of the state, Pittsburgh at the other, and Pennsyltucky in between. People who support radically conservative political views support candidates who support those views - how else?
