It's Good to be the Boss

CNN has a story on people who have been fired for blogging. Since I don't have a boss, I don't have to worry about such things, but those of you who work for a private company, you should keep in mind that the first amendment does not protect you from being fired in most cases for what you might write in a blog.

yesterday, as we were headed into an informal research group discussion, one of the locals grabbed me and pointed out the window at a small plume of smoke on the mountain above Santa Barbara
I'm not sure about the NUMBER of fires. That might be hard to count. If five small fires emerge and are put out, there are five fires. If five fires emerge, join into one configuration, and wipe out a handful of mountain villages in the Rockies, that's one fire.
âAs fire fighters, we know the risks of answering the call, but it does not lessen our pain when the worst happens,â said Harold Schaitberger, general president of the Int'l Association of Fire Fighters.

Hey, they didn't give her blog address!! *L*

Just to note, you might not be "fire-able" for your blogging since you are self-employed, but it is the case that some people may refuse to make use of your services because of your blogging. So you are not necessarily exempt from economic consequences of your blogging.

On the other hand, some people may make use of your services because of your blogging. So the net economic effect is not clear.

There was an interesting case recently regarding Hiawatha Bray, the Boston Globe's "technology" columnist, and some comments he made on various blogs last fall regarding the election. Apparently, he wrote some columns for the Globe regarding the Kerry campaign, and also posted some comments on a couple of blogs critical of Kerry using his real name (a dumb thing to do). This recently came to light on David Brock's Media Matters web site. I'm not exactly sure what the Globe did, but it appears that Bray was admonished (not fired) for his conduct.
