Being Quoted in a Debate Round

Jim Anderson of Decorabilia, who coaches debate out in Washington, notes that Timothy Sandefur was cited during a Lincoln-Douglas debate he saw recently. I've never been cited in a debate, that I know of, but I have judged debates and had friends cited. And I remember judging a debate involving a Georgetown Day School team (GDS is a private school in D.C. where a large percentage of the rich and powerful send their kids) in which one team cited the father of one of the debaters on the other team and, according to the GDS debater, misinterpreted him. And once I had someone cite the husband of an old friend whose marriage I had attended about third world debt.

Lincoln Chafee, Hillary Clinton, Martin O'Malley, Bernie Sanders, and Jim Webb faced off in the Facebook-CNN sponsored debate. Who won? The individual who "won" is the individual whose poll numbers went up the most, and we don't know that yet. But there are other ways to win, and other ways to…
Someone suggested that I should write something about the upcoming presidential debates that draws on my background as a debate judge, coach and theorist (yes, there is actually such a thing as debate theory and I've actually published on it). It brought to mind 1988, when I was in college and…
One of the things that has happened in competitive debate over the last decade or so is the development of the "kritik" (pronounced just like critique). This was just beginning to come into use when I was getting out of coaching and judging in the early 90s and at the time I thought it was a…
Tomorrow may or may not be the first of the presidential debates between Obama and McCain. I'll watch, although I find political debates really depressing, and not just because reality is a little bleak right now. I'm always frustrated at the level of the discourse. If a candidate goes where a…

Ahh yes, the team of Sandy Berger's son and Norm Ornstein's son. Quite a duo... I saw them a few times.

BTW, I'm a longtime lurker. I love the blog, keep it up!

I don't think that was them because I was out of the activity by the time they would have been there (I stopped coaching in 1990 and judging in probably 1992). But GDS has had so many kids of the prominent attend there that this happens fairly regularly. Their team this year is quite impressive. They've already won St. Marks, East Grand Rapids and the Georgetown round robin and probably more I don't know about.
