Our little project has hit the big time with an article in today's New York Times. The article focuses mostly on business aspects like attracting advertisers, but it should certainly help generate some interest for us all.

I'm sure there are some blogs where that is already the case, but not here. I think all of the authors here are pretty much agreed that the moment anyone tells us what we can or can't write, this project is over. I know that's true for me. That was a big point of emphasis for me in negotiating the contract and I made sure that there was very explicit language saying that I alone control the content of my blog. I think the folks at Seed Media understand that were they to attempt to assert such control, they would quickly find themselves with no product to sell to advertisers.

Early on when we thought up science blogs we pictured it as a network of puppets whose strings we could pull at will, but as you can see that didn't work out. ;)

Christopher M, for those who don't know, is the head of the ScienceBlogs project. As you can see, he found out pretty quickly that we're a fairly cantankerous bunch. To be fair, I should note that while we all agree that we will not accept any censorship of what we write, there has been no hint of anything to worry about in that regard. Seed has put it in writing that the content of our blogs is exclusively up to each individual author and that obviously speaks to their commitment to that principle. They chose us because they liked what we were doing already. It makes little sense to try and change what we do.
