New Banner

With the change in color scheme for Science Blogs, I thought a change in the banner to better match the new scheme was in order. Jeff Hebert, who designed the original banner, was once again kind enough to do several rounds of modifications for me until we got one that I really liked. So thanks to Jeff, as always, for his time and effort.

More like this

I want to thank everyone who was kind enough to send me banners to choose from. Several people did and they were all good. As someone who is completely clueless when it comes to the use of photo editing software, I am just amazed at what people can do with them and how quickly they can do it when I…
Take a close look around and tell me .. what's new? Thanks to Jeff Hebert, who caught my attention by sending me a basic banner design that we reworked into the design that you see above (for those of you who are seeking computer graphics and especially for those of you who are, or soon will be,…
This is so cool. I took someone to task for misrepresenting my position and said that they weren't arguing with me but with the "Ed in their head". Jeff Hebert, a longtime reader and a graphic artist, thought that concept was funny and he designed two graphics for me. I'll post the first one on the…
As you can see, there's a new site banner. I got about a dozen submissions this time. They were all terrific, but something about this one just really grabbed me; it was absolutely exactly what I wanted. It was designed by Josh Gemmel. So Josh gets immortalized in the "about" tab of the blog. Any…

Looks good.

Ah... no banner at all now when I log on.... ???

Maybe it's my browser, but the bottom part of the logo, "Religion, Law, and Culture" is cropped off a bit to tightly to the bottom. Other than that, I like it a lot!

Did I miss the explanation somewhere? Is that art original? Is it supposed to be some group of people or some location I should instantly recognize? Just curious.

I like the new banner, more than the old one.

The painting is Rafael's The School of Athens, which is in the Vatican museum. It represents a gathering of great thinkers, including Plato, Aristotle, Euclid, Pythagoras and Diogenes. On Plato's side, they are wondering about the mysteries of the world; on Aristotle's side, they are wondering about nature and mankind (according to descriptions I have read). Jeff picked it out and given the subject matter of this blog I thought it was perfect. It is considered Rafael's greatest work and one of the gems of the Italian Renaissance.

It looked great before and it still does. I kinda like banners to look a little bit defferent from the rest of the site - for individuality and to stand out - but maybe a banner that doesn't stand out (compared to the site design) does in fact stand out (compared to the other blogs).
