Theocon Priorities

Think Progress has video of Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, chief sponsor of the Marriage Protection Act, speaking at last weekend's Values Voters Summit. It includes gems like this:

Musgrave declared that gay marriage "is the most important issue that we face today." She told the audience that "when you're in a cultural war like this, you have to respond with equal and hopefully greater force if you want to win," and warned that the "future is grim" if gay marriage is not banned.

How's that for having your priorities straight? We've got a government flouting the constitution at every turn, we've got a war in Iraq costing us $2 billion a week, we've got $400 billion deficits...and gay marriage is the most important issue in the world. Because if gays are allowed to get married....well, there's no arguments about any specific thing that will happen. We just know that it will "destroy" marriage...somehow. What, you don't buy the logical link? You must be a pagan, humanist, moral relativist fag lover.

It's election time here in the US and we need a new Congress -- here's why: 1. Congress set a record for the fewest number of days worked -- 218 between the House and Senate combined. [Link] 2. The Senate voted down a measure that urged the administration to start a phased redeployment of U.S.…
In the creation/evolution debate, the religious right loves to argue about missing links; in the debate over gay marriage, they seem to specialize in arguments with missing links. In column after column, we see the same argument repeated - gay marriage will "destroy" marriage - without any of them…
Jonathan Rauch has a terrific column on the politics of the Federal Marriage Amendment (now apparently called the Marriage Protection Amendment). Why would the Republican leadership bother to bring up a bill for a vote that they know has no chance of passing? Pure demagoguery: The MPA would amend…
A New York state court ruled today that gay couples must be allowed to marry in that state. Like the decision in Massachusetts, this decision is based upon the NY state constitution, not the U.S. Constitution, so it only is enforcable in that state. But it is still an enormously important ruling.…

There is a woman I work with (I work in Boston). When the court forbade excluding gay people from being married, she kept telling me "this is going to be trouble". I could not for the life of me get an answer from her as to what SORT of trouble she expected -- just repeated assertions that trouble would follow. Most infuriating.

As with all "controversy" involving the GLBT communities, they are afraid for their children. They don't seem to think that their beliefs will hold up against reality, if their kids actually see that gays are just people - not demons. And they're right - if they don't force society to insulate their children, their children realize that gays aren't so bad - even going as far as to realise that the odd feelings they have been ashamed of, hidden in the back of their mind, are actually just fine, that they should celebrate and embrace them rather than denying them and living a lie. The marriage issue is no different.

Ok, I just want to clear up something. When Marilyn Musgrave claims that the people of Colorado agree that marriage is between a man and a women she's lying. I live in Fort Collins (which is in her district) and just the other day I saw people on the side of the road with signs against the constitutional amendment about gay marriage. Marilyn Musgrave is a lying whore.
