CDC has posted images of the H1N1/2009 (aka swine flu) virus. This looks like it is grown in tissue culture (probably dog kidney cancer cells). It presents the ideal picture of a spherical virus studded with HA and NA protein spikes on its surface and enveloped with capsular material derived from the host cell. When flu virus infects actual organ tissue in an intact host it is pleomorphic, i.e., it has a variety of shapes, including a long threadlike one. However this is its ideal shape, often rendered in cartoon or diagram form in textbooks.
Here's a typical diagram of a flu virus:

We talk so much about the flu virus we thought we'd show you some nice pics that CDC has just put up. This is a review for many of you put reviews are always helpful. In these three pics, only one is the actual swine flu virus, the other two being "cartoon" depictions of a generic influenza virus.…
There is no way to keep up with all the flu news, so we pick and choose, usually based on some kind of point we want to make. That's both the good and the bad of this blog: the news comes with a point of view. But so does most news, and we try to make ours both explicit and scientifically as…
[Back in January we did a series of posts on the old site giving some background science on the influenza virus for the general reader. The Reveres are traveling (for a change) and so we thought it was an appropriate time to dig around in the old archives and update some of the posts thought…
[This is the last post in a series about viral and cell surface glycoproteins and their role in the influenza story. It's a slightly updated series from the archives on the old site. Links to all four posts: part I, part II, part III, part IV]
In the first three posts of this series we have given…
Is there any validity to the story I just read about the swine flu being a cover up for the industrial-sized factory hog farms' improper waste removal practices and overall deplorable hog raising techniques?
The article was entitled Flying Pigs, Tamiflu and Factory Farms / By F. William Engdahl can be found at: http://www.bestcyrano.org/?p=1250
Just looking for some truth here.
Interesting. Doesn't look anything like a pig, however. Keep track of the outbreak at FluCount.org
For the record, science is so freakin' cool. I sometimes find myself regretting that I gave up on microbiology after seeing the math requirements for a B.S.
Beautiful!
Thank you for up to date so fast.
Always good to read http://scienceblogs.com
Can find many things to read and learn not to mention interconnection with other scienceblogs.
:)
Very Interesting. Thats why I love science, glad I didn't give it up. Cool picture!
