1) No matter how secure the secret government facility, there will always be an unguarded network of tube-like service entrances; 2) The head of the most important secret government agency, charged with the greatest of responsibilities, will be a knuckle headed moron; 3) No matter how many people are after you, using all sorts of equipment, there is always time for a long good bye; 4) A man can be slammed on the floor, wall, and ceiling by a Golem-like evil monster bad guy as many times as you like and he'll be fine. It used to be a festival of fun created and celebrated by geeks but with no official recognition. Now, National Pi Day is a legal holiday in the US (but not one you get to take a day off of work for). Washington politicians took time from bailouts and earmark-laden spending packages on Wednesday for what might seem like an unusual act: officially designating a National Pi Day. That's Pi as in ratio-of-a-circle's-circumference-to-diameter, better known as the mathematical constant beginning with 3.14159. The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a resolution introduced two days…
List of earmarks for Michele Bachmann's district: - $94,000 for Sheriffs Youth Program of MN - $335,000 for Equipment Acquisition for Northland Medical Center - $803,000 for Replacement Small Buses, St. Cloud Metro Bus and many more. Details here. Does she really think she can get away with these lies! Well, actually, yes.
On this week's show we're going to try something different. We'll have a discussion between an atheist and a Christian about the current state of morality in this country. Is the decline of religion really leading to a loss of moral values, as the Religious Right claims? Is America going to hell in a handbasket? Join us for what promises to be a lively debate between August Berkshire, past president of Minnesota Atheists, and Robert Dull of The Pearlygate Network. "Atheists Talk" airs live on AM 950 KTNF in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. To stream live, go here. Podcasts of past…
This is the river just above the dam (you can click this picture for a whopping big version): And these birds seem to be waiting for the other shoe to drop:
Spring is an ecological phenomenon of weather and biota linked to orbital geometry. More importantly, spring is here, as of this very moment, in Anoka County, Minnesota. The parts of Anoka County, Minnesota that are not built on consist of scrubland, prairie, and marsh. So there is a lot of grass. For the last several weeks it has been unseasonably cold. So the soil beneath the grass is frozen solid. This frozen-state is facilitated by the fact that we have not had much snow, which otherwise might have insulated the ground and kept it warmer. And, this lack of snow means that when we…
And ... WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD!!! Oh, I don't think Glen Beck is excusing the killer. He's blaming mass murder on the Democrats and Liberals. Subtle but important difference. Hat Tip Dump Bachmann
We're all stupid on facebook, but maybe this guy was extra stupid: "A man on trial in New York for possession of a weapon has been acquitted after subpoenaing his arresting officer's Facebook and MySpace accounts. His defense: Officer Vaughan Ettienne's MySpace 'mood' was set to 'devious' on the day of the arrest, and one day a few weeks before the trial, his Facebook status read 'Vaughan is watching "Training Day" to brush up on proper police procedure.' source: /. I've noticed that many of my Facebook friends have the proverbial hazy picture of themselves getting sloshed on umbrella drinks…
A recent report has revealed that France's national police force has saved an estimated 50 million euros since 2004 by adopting open source software and migrating a portion of the organization's workstations to Ubuntu Linux. They plan to roll out the Linux distro to all 90,000 of their workstations by 2015. ars
I live in a state where the governer, in order to maintain his moral and ethical high ground, must refuse any stimulus package money whatsoever. I also live in a state that just accepted piles of stimulus money to start up a number of shovel-ready projects. If my calculations are correct, this money will tranlate into about 3,000 over the next six months to a year. (Very very rough guess.) Mark Sanford is the Republican governor of South Carolina. That governor almost got away with misusing the stimulus funds. But .... */ Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about…

Today, the last witness for the Franken campaign made it through the weather and testified. Franken's side rested! The special side case of the Nauen petition "count my votes" appeared to finish. However finishing does still seem to be a problem, because apparently the rebuttals and cross-examinations of rebuttals can go on a long time. Arguments on provisionally accepted evidence are still waiting to be heard. So if we are lucky, we will have a one hour close by each side tomorrow after remaining business gets finished --- that is if remaining business is finished. Details And don't forget…
I just got this brief from Robert Luhn of the NCSE Representative Leo Berman (Republican, District 6, Smith County) has just introduced HB 2800, which would exempt "certain private nonprofit educational institutions" from the rules other degree-granting schools must follow in Texas. The aim, apparently, is to help the Institute for Creation Research's graduate school, which was denied state certification (a precursor to accreditation) when it moved to Texas. The ICR is a "Young Earth Creationist" organization that believes the Earth is 10,000 years old, Noah's flood really happened,…
You probably know by now that the travelling exhibit featuring the bones o Al-288-1, known to most as "Lucy," has been drawing small crowds, and the museums that are hosting it are losing money. Why? I have guess. You may remember that when the news first got around that Lucy would be on tour, there was a fair amount of discussion regarding the possibility that this was a bad idea. The fossils are delicate, and there is a good argument that they should not be moved for this purpose. I may be wrong about this, but I think the palaeoanthropology community is sort of divided on this issue,…

An interesting example of natural selection. If these organisms were humans, someone would be asking "Has evolution stopped for these jellyfish, I mean, humans?" And the answer is no.
