This streaming video is both silly and interesting. Created in just five days with a budget of $20 (obviously, none of the actors were provided with health insurance, which seems wrong), it gives you a glimpse into what can be done with a lot of imagination and creativity and only a few materials [4:36]

The idea that global warming is not just about polar bears in the Arctic, but also about American Robins in our own backyards has captured people's attention. Nearly 60% of the 305 species found in North America in winter are on the move, shifting their ranges northward by an average of 35 miles. Audubon scientists analyzed 40 years of citizen-science Christmas Bird Count data -- and their findings provide new and powerful evidence that global warming is having a serious impact on natural systems. Northward…

Is this the sporocarp of a basidiomycete or an ascomycete?
The photographer writes;
I photographed these at the Katy Prairie Conservancy Field Office, about 40 miles west of Houston, where the air is clean enough to permit luxuriant growth of lichens. The photo was taken in late afternoon in October 2007.

This is a photo from near the beginning of my epic journey (the beginning was when I finally managed to catch the subway to JFK in the first place -- a two hour ride!).
A friend has flown me to freezing cold Helsinki! My flight to Helsinki on FinnAir is a nonstop red-eye from JFK. This is great for those who like to save on hotel costs by sleeping on airplanes, but for those who cannot sleep on planes, like me, this is rather challenging. Especially since I was also unable to sleep the…

Lichens.
Image: Biosparite, 2009 [larger view].
Lichens are a symbiotic association between a fungus (the mycobiont) with a photosynthetic partner (the photobiont or phycobiont), usually either a green alga or cyanobacterium. The morphology, physiology and biochemistry of lichens are very different to that of the isolated fungus and alga in culture. Lichens occur in some of the most extreme environments on Earth -- arctic tundra, hot deserts, rain forests, rocky coasts and toxic slag heaps. Lichens are widespread and long-lived; however,…

After the moth emerges, he expands his wings by pumping his body fluid into them. The music is "The Voice" by Technician. [1:11]
