The baseball gods smile--at least for now

Unbelievable.

Contrary to my predictions last week, somehow the Detroit Tigers have managed to remain undefeated through the first week of the baseball season. They're 5-0. Just as enjoyable, the Cleveland Indians are right behind them, with a 4-1 record.

But that's not the best thing.

No, the best thing is that the dreaded New York Yankees are in last place as of this writing. They're 1-4.

I love it.

Yes, I know it probably can't last (with the possible exception of the Indians remaining in contention for winning the A.L. Central Division) and that the first 5 games or so of a 162 game season mean little, but I plan to enjoy it while I can, before Detroit takes its inevitable plunge back to fourth place.

...for the Indians to advance to the ALCS. I know, I know, long time readers know that I'm a Detroit Tigers fan. Sadly, after dominating their division during the first half of the season, my hometown team took a late season plunge right out of playoff contention, much to my dismay. Fortunately,…
Opening day at last! The 2006 baseball season starts this weekend. One thing that I can predict with a high degree of certainty is that, sadly, my old hometown team the Detroit Tigers will continue to suck, getting deeper into their second decade of futility as measured by sub-.500 records. In…
The inescapable sports story of the week has been Alex Rodriguez's decision to opt out of his contract with the Yankees and pursue more money on the free-agent market. While it amuses me to see an off-season story about the Yankees eclipsing the Red Sox winning the World Series, I find this…
I know I'm a few days late on this, but I thought I'd follow up last year's embarrassing predictions with another slate. Actually, it wasn't all bad. I predicted that the Pistons would be better than the year before and they were. I predicted that the Miami Heat would start slow, leading Pat Riley…

Well, now I can wear my English "D" logo stuff around all the Yankees fans and really annoy them....Let's go Tigers! (Hey, they're overdue for at least a league championship....)

Gonna be a long season, Orac.

NY beat up Bartolo Colon today 10-1. In their 2 wins they scored 25 runs. Though 2-5 they've outscored their opponents.

Like I said, gonna be a long season.

Having recently moved from Detroit, I'm enjoying your comments on the Tigers. Also being from New England and a Red Sox fan, I'm very much enjoying the current fate of the Yankees! It won't last though........Now in Texas, and still a Red Sox fan, at least the Astros look like they might be contenders again.

New to blogs and a biomedical scientist, thanks for the good read.

As usual, win or lose, the Yankees steal the spotlight from the Mets....
