Sunday night's 60 Minutes wrapped up, as usual, with Andy Rooney's rambling commentary. He recently asked "what are we doing in Iraq" in a kind of Cronkite-esque moment, so I have made a point of watching him when I can, in hopes he might say something else with gravitas. Last night was almost such a moment: he dissed atheists.
Apparently, among the many pieces of crap that viewers send him -- always unsolicited -- is a T-shirt warning that reading the Holy Bible can impair one's judgment. "Sent by an atheist I suppose. I don't know how many atheists there are in this country" was his comment.
Well, I don't know how many there are either. Somewhere between 15 million and 45 million, depending on the polls. But his flippant tone suggests Rooney isn't one of them. At first I was a little offended, but then I realized that it isn't every Sunday evening that millions of Americans are exposed, however briefly, to a subversive little memes the likes of "the Holy Bible isn't the word of a god."
So, thanks Andy. Keep up the good work.

You consider that a "diss" worthy of offense? Jeez. They make this stuff called skin. You may want to look into getting some. By the way...15 to 45 million? Are you kidding? He said how many atheists are in this country, not how many atheists have been in yer mom. (Now that's a diss, by the way!)
as far as disses go, that was pretty much a non-dis. Let's take a look who else was dissed:
Irrational Tums supporters.
Kazoos, harmonicas, Jews and their harps.
Bruce Bowman - and gives him a plug when he said he doesn't give plugs. No publicity is bad publicity...
Anyone who knows what a karat is.
Amateur painters who are such big fans that they paint pictures of him and send them. And he says they suck.
Oh, and athiests.
...It's Andy Freakin Rooney. He and his fanbase will be gone very soon, sorry to say.
"Yer Mom" jokes?
dude... seriously man... grow up.
"Yer Mom" jokes have a long and honoured history in comedy. Every once in a while, we should pay tribute to this aspect of humour. It's fun and easy to do.
Like yer mom.
See?
I've gotten less and less fond of Rooney over the past couple decades but always end up cutting him some slack because of The Great American Dream Machine. The Famous Comedians School "commercial" with Albert Brooks, or Marshall Efron explaining how to make better home movies or taking us to an expedition to the Secret Automobile Graveyard...
Andy Rooney is a self-proclaimed atheist. Its on youtube amongst other places.
