Swearengen sees some virtue in Wolfowitz

Uh-oh—Neddie is channeling Al Swearengen again. If anything is going to resurrect the restless spirit of a hard, profane thug, it's got to be the recent mess of an affair with Wolfowitz.

Uh-oh. It turns out that Iowa is even more remote from the ocean than Minnesota (we at least have a great lake connecting us to the Atlantic, sorta), and it's darned hard to find an Iowa-Cephalopod connection. Except, of course, that once upon a time the great inland sea stretched up this way, and…
You all know how the Indiana Jones movies are written, don't you? Let me recreate for you the day Steven Spielberg sat down with his head writer to put together the outline of what would be the fourth installment in the franchise. Spielberg: Guys, here it is: the secret formula for a successful…
It isn't always the message, sometimes it's the medium. Or the media actually. Framing only goes so far. Often, getting your message out there comes down to schmoozing, intimidation, and hard work. This applies to politics and science. The Daily Howler rebuts neuroscientist Drew Westen's take…
Peter Watts is a biologist and a science fiction author who combines the two beautifully — watch his fictional presentation on vampires to a pharmacology group to see what I mean. He's also a Canadian who was driving from the US to his home in Toronto when he was assaulted by American border guards…

That is a good article!!!

The Bank understandably wants to throw Wolfowitz overboard. I say, Let the ship go down with the captain.

Don't get me wrong, I think Wolfowitz and his compatriots bear responsibility for the present Iraq debacle, but if what Christopher Hitchens says is true (http://www.slate.com/id/2164368/?nav=navoa), then it's possible that the "girlfriend" in question, Shaha Riza, is a highly qualified long-time World Bank staffer, who took this new outside position in order to AVOID the conflict of interest that would follow from having Wolfowitz as her supervisor. In which case the whole "scandal" appears to have been contrived to attack the (justifiably) disliked Wolfowitz, while destroying the professional reputation of Ms. Riza based solely on her personal life -- not a very feminist thing for the left to do.

Neddie loves him some PZ Myers....

I rather stopped listening to anything Christopher Hitchens says some time ago -- and my liver is the healthier for it -- but to have your Main Squeeze working anywhere in your organization is asking for trouble.

Bravo Hugo Chavez!

"President Hugo Chavez announced Monday he would formally pull Venezuela out of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, a largely symbolic move since the nation has already canceled its debts to the lending institutions."

This CNN report is interesting because it uses the word "canceled"--11:21 pm. In fact in an earlier report, CNN used the correct term, "paid off".

So, why did CNN decide to change the wording? Here is the report some minutes earlier--10:46 pm.

can'celed check'

a check that has been redeemed by a bank and then usually returned to the issuer, i.e. paid off.

It might be something as innocent as cultural nuance in terminology,eh? Nah,that was deliberate.
