I believe that was defined by Christ himself, when He said that being religious was no justification to avoid paying your taxes. "Render unto Caesar..." etc. His refusal to allow the crowd to crown him, his upbraiding of Simon the Zealot and his rejection of Satan's offer of the whole world should also be telling.
In other words, all of the responsibilities and none of the assumed rights.
