Good Sports Weekend

I had a long post about Norman Spinrad all typed up when Firefox crashed, so you'll have to wait for train-wrecky SF goodness. So here's some sports commentary to pass the time.

It was a good sports weekend in Chateau Steelypips:

1) I don't really follow college football, but I do have a certain affection for Syracuse, so it was great to see the Orange, 36.5 point underdogs according to the bookies of the world, upset Louisville 38-35. It's always sweet when a 30-point underdog wins a game, but it's especially nice when it's one of my teams.

2) My Giants won in improbable fashion, stopping the Redskins on fourth-and-goal with 20 seconds on the clock to preserve a 24-17 victory. I'm half inclined to say that this was more a redskins loss than a Giants win-- on the final drive, the Skins hit that same down-the-middle route that everybody else has used against the Giants for three big gains, after inexplicably failing to run it for most of the game. The defense came up huge at the goal line, though, so good for them.

3) The machine-like Patriots put up 38 points for the third straight game.

4) I don't really follow baseball, but the AL East race continues to be close enough to make people in Boston crazy, with the Yankees a mere 1.5 games back, after trailing by 14 games at one point this season. It's not exactly 1978 all over again-- Boston has clinched at least the wild card-- but it's no end of amusing to watch "Red Sox Nation" work up a good fit of panic.

This has been a rough basketball season. What with one thing and another, I haven't been able to see many games involving either Maryland or Syracuse, and those games I have seen have been bad. Last night looked like it was going to be an exception, with my Terps holding a big lead over Clemson…
A busy sporting weekend for Chateau Steelypips: First, there were two NFL wild card games on Saturday, as a sort of appetizer for the real action on Sunday. The Colts borrowed a defense from somewhere, and despite Peyton Manning deciding to play like his little brother for the first half or so,…
There were several sporting events worth commenting on this weekend, none of which I saw in their entirety. Hence, the combo recap post. Maryland-BC The Terps got beat by Boston College in a game that I didn't realize was on TV until Kate told me about it about midway through the second half. I'm…
It's Saturday on the second weekend of the college football season. Tomorrow (Sunday) marks the opening of the NFL season (okay, the season really kicked off Thursday night). Also, we're hitting the home stretch of the major league baseball season, and the playoffs are just around the corner. With…
