Saturday night's not alright for fighting

Yesterday's Miami versus Florida International game "featured" a bench-clearing brawl that should result in more than just a few token one-game suspensions. The NCAA needs to get involved and I agree with Kevin that scholarships should be lost. Miami seem to be a little out of control, what with brawling in the tunnel with LSU at the Peach Bowl or classlessly stomping on the Cardinal at Louisville last month.

I haven't written much about basketball this year, for the simple reason that I haven't watched much basketball this year-- between SteelyKid, the book, and my day job, I just haven't had time. This weekend, though, I watched a whole bunch of hoops, mostly involving my two teams, Syracuse and…
The 2011 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship officially started Tuesday, with the first of the "First Four" games, formerly known as the "play-in" game. That one commentator is a total asshat. He should be fired immediately for justifying such behavior.

I saw players using their helmet as a weapon and kicking people with their cleats. As a former high school football referee, I would have been tempted to just call the game at that point and let the authorities sort it out using the video replay. Too often athletes are allowed to get away with behavior that the rest of us would be arrested and prosecuted for. If this is a growing trend in college football, I think I'll pass.

So far, 18 FIU players and 13 University of Miami players have one game suspensions with more sanctions possible. Source.

It really isn't surprising to me that Miami has been involved in so many of these types of incedents. They have a long standing tradition of Thuggery in their football program. I think you can count this as on of the last straws in Coker's tenure as Head Football coach.

According to this the other shoe fell for 18 FIU players and one University of Miami player and Comcast Sports Southeast commentator Lamar Thomas got the boot.

The most disgusting thing about this is the amount of cheering coming from the fans.

Have you heard the former player that was one of the announcers at the game?

Wow.

He did lose his job, deservedly so.
