Can we have a playoff system now?

OK, so Michigan lost to a team that itself lost to UCLA and Oregon State. Unsurprisingly, Dwayne Jarrett showed himself to be a classless TO-wannabe. But what about Boise State? 43-42 over Oklahoma in overtime to go unbeaten. Classic, just classic.

So, remember a month or two back when everybody was whining about how Michigan got screwed out of a shot at the Mythical National Championship? They lost to USC last night. USC, you'll recall, demonstrated their inferiority to Michigan by losing to UCLA, which is how they ended up in the Rose Bowl…
Tonight #16 Hawaii played San Jose State and won 42-35 in overtime. That’s the same San Jose that ASU beat 45-3. Hawaii go 7-0 but frankly, given whom they have beat, are horribly overrated. Despite being unbeaten. Hawaii haven’t really met any real opposition (witness Northern Colorado, Louisiana…

I know the season just started, but if there's a better game to be played than the one last night between Gonzaga and Michigan State, I can't wait to see it. If you missed it, you missed a triple overtime classic. It wasn't Duke-Kentucky in 92 great, but it was a small step below it. How about two…

That game was mind-blowing. I believe in miracles now after seeing about six in a row. (However, there were clearly two gods warring over the result of the Fiesta Bowl.)

Plus, the guy who made the 2-point conversion at the end proposed to his cheerleader girlfriend on national TV just afterwards. Not exactly fair to her, I say, but I guess when things are going your way, you go for it...

All in all, I like it that the costliest NCAA program leaves some ambiguity at the end of the season. But if we have to have a playoff, make sure that the venues are distributed across the U.S. proportional to the locations of the schools. One wonders how many championships the USCs, LSUs, Miami's and Florida's would have if their bowl game was in Boulder, Lincoln, or East Lansing.

I really don't understand the desire to crown a national champion. I enjoy the college football regular season and the bowl games on January 1st (and now 2nd and 8th). I like that it's not basketball where all the focus is on the "big" tournament which with the large number of participants makes the regular season less important.

Wow, watching Boise State pull off that win yessterday was damn fun -- the sort of fun you'll never see in the NFL. And it didn't require a playoff to make it happen. Ditto the Michigan loss at Ohio State at the end of the Big Ten season -- a great game even for this UM alumnus.

There's a general feeling in the NCAA that adding playoff games to the regular football schedule would put undue demands on student-athletes both academically and athletically. Therefore, the Bowl Championship Series will most likely be in place for some time to come.

"Unsurprisingly, Dwayne Jarrett showed himself to be a classless TO-wannabe."

Let's hope it's just youthful exuberance and that he will grow up.
