My ex-student Mike Price has a nice article up at Geotimes about Jerome, a once-booming mining town in Arizona that was described as "the wickedest town in the West". It now has a population of 350.

Ahh, Jerome. I used to love going there (and Bisbee) when I lived in Tucson. Something kinda cool and relaxing about hanging out in those old mining towns.
Ah, Jerome! We used to drive up there from Flagstaff where I was an undergraduate at NAU for a day of fun and pizza. We'd have a few beers at the Spirit Room, then head down to the NY Pizza store where some guy had run out of money and decided to start a pizza business. Great times.
When I was growing up, my parents and I would periodically make the trek up to Jerome from Phoenix. What I remember most about those trips is seeing lots of geodes and having some damn good ice cream.
