The American South
If I live to 93 and someone holds a mirror up to my life, I wonder how proud or embarrassed I would be.
In my weekend reading, I realized that I never commented on the passing last month of former Florida Democratic Senator, George A. Smathers. He was 93 and left this world largely revered by today's Floridians.
I bring up Smathers because of my educational links to the State of Florida, my previous writing on Florida civil rights leader Stetson Kennedy, and the melding of Smathers and Kennedy by Woody Guthrie in a song written to drum up votes during Kennedy's unsuccessful write-in campaign…
This was going to be a funny post until I saw this video, provided by the Cary, NC, Fire Department via our local newspaper.
With the storms up and down the US East Coast today and tomorrow (and frickin' snow in Georgia and South Carolina), our local public radio station just ran warnings to those who plan to deep-fry their turkeys for Thanksgiving.
Local authorities are concerned that with the inclement weather, folks might move their deep-fryers into garages and under carports. Two house fires resulted locally last year from such activity. Proper deep-frying is conducted safely on a flat…
Modern Skirts, the musical darlings of the Athens, GA, music scene, will be making their New York City live debut this evening at the legendary Mercury Cafe. They'll be playing with tremendous Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter, Jennifer O'Connor, and indie stalwarts, Portostatic.
Modern Skirts are an intelligent piano- and guitar-based band with impeccable focus on interesting and intoxicatingly infectious song structures centered around tremendous vocal abilities, most often from the fresh tenor of Jay Gulley, but all of the guys can sing...I mean, really sing! They list as their primary…
I was so happy to learn that this e-mail is still posted on CNN's website.
After I read it a year ago, I paid $55 on eBay for a Joe Horn Saints' jersey:
There was a Saint in New Orleans during the wrath of Hurricane Katrina and his name is Joe Horn, pro-football player for the New Orleans Saints. As I sat in my room at the Hilton Riverside, New Orleans, on Saturday two days before Katrina was scheduled to directly hit New Orleans, I weeped while I phoned home to North Carolina, to speak with my mother and my children. It had been confirmed that my flight was canceled along with that of my…
Let me just say that I love Pam Spaulding of Pam's House Blend and Pandagon.
"I'm black, I'm a lesbian, I'm in the South, and I have lived in the North. I represent different constituencies that aren't well-represented in the blogosphere," says Spaulding, an information technology specialist with Duke University Press.
I hadn't known much about her until my first blog meet-up where I met some dude named Bora, Coturnix, or some crazy thing like that, who first told me that she is one of my reality-based neighbors.
So, the other day, I'm over at one of the many campuses where I hold adjunct…
