Irish Rugby

Some quick takes as I’m still too busy to write anything significant ... With everything going on at the moment, I’ve been neglecting to post on the Irish rugby team’s performance in the Six Nations Championship. On the 7th they lost to France (26-21) and today they beat Scotland, 34-13. So that is two wins and a loss so far, enough to put them in second place (albeit because of a better point differential than France or England) behind Wales, whom they play next. Somehow I hadn’t noticed that Neil Young released two live albums last year, Live at Massey Hall 1971 and Live at the Fillmore…
The Six Nations Championship began today, with Ireland trying to recover from a disappointing World Cup showing last year. A 16-11 defeat of Italy is a win, but not a very convincing one. On the other hand, Wales defeating England 26-19 at Twickenham is always good news. Remaining fixtures for the Irish are: France (2/7) at Stade de France Scotland (2/23) at Croke Park Wales (3/8) at Croke Park England (3/15) at Twickenham Any readers in Europe manage to see the game (or for that matter the Welsh victory)? Any comments? I resisted making comments about rugby being infinitely better than…
Ireland have agonizingly missed out on winning the Six Nations 2007 despite beating Italy 51-24 in Rome. Ireland's win meant that France faced Scotland knowing they had to win by a margin of 24 points or more. The French did what they had to, winning by 46-19 thanks to a last-gasp try.
Ireland won its third Triple Crown in four years with a 19-18 victory over Scotland and Murrayfield. No further comment.
After being defeated by the French two weeks ago, the Irish hammered the luckless English 43-13 to keep their Triple Crown hopes alive. Victory over Scotland at Edinburgh on March 10th will mean the title is theirs.
In a thrilling game in Croke Park, Ireland rallied back from a ten point deficit to take the lead, only to be denied victory by a late French try. France won 20-17, destroying the Grand Slam hopes of the Irish and preventing a first victory over France since 2003.
Ireland kicked off its Six Nations Championship campaign with a 19-9 victory over Wales today in Cardiff. Next up are France (who shellacked Italy, 39 - 3).Since it is practically impossible to see any European rugby here in the US, I haven't a clue what transpired during either game. On the other hand, media saturation regarding the Super Bowl is due to occur any second now. So as a service to my American readers who think that American football is a tough game, I give you these Rugby League hits - note the absence of pads and helmets and the fact that players stay on the field for the…
With the ASU football season winding down, it is time to turn to other things. So why not rugby? The Irish team are favorites for the coming Six Nations Championship, after winning the Triple Crown last year, and a series of victories over South Africa, Australia and the Pacific Islanders which left them the #5 ranked team in the world (bizarrely behind two teams that they beat fairly handily). The first home game will be played in Croke Park, the fourth largest stadium in Europe. This is fairly significant as the Gaelic Athletic Association (governing body for Gaelic Football and owners of…
