Some news over the last few days: The lava flows from Kilauea are moving with a vengeance right now, damaging roads and heading for some structures. The lava flows near Kalapana have moved almost 200 meters since Sunday, closing within 100 yards of homes in the area. The lava is moving to the east along Highway 130 and 137 - and tourists are making it difficult to get around as they park to watch the lava - upwards of 2,000 people! There has been news over the last few days of a number of volcanoes in Colombia, so I thought I'd try to gather it up here: The steaming summit of Nevado del Huila in Colombia Nevado del Huila has been ramping up its ash emissions, potentially pointing towards new eruptions from the crater dome. The NASA Earth Observatory posted a new image of the grey ash plume from the volcano poking its way up through the clouds. This plume made it all the way to ~11 km / 36,000 feet, so it definitely isn't insignificant. This comes after an increase in seismicity (up to 1,000 earthquakes in the last week…
The move is complete (finally) ... so maybe I can settle down a bit, right? Right? The world's deadliest volcano? Anyway, a few things I stumbled across this week: Forbes Traveler.com has a list boldly titled "World's Deadliest Volcanoes", which more or less is a slideshow of nice volcano pictures and some dubious ranking - mostly based on death toll (and cribbing a bit from IAVCEI's "Decade Volcanoes"). Of course, I find it amusing that they made a list of "deadliest volcanoes" and then proceed to tell people (read "tourists") what to do near the so-called "deadly" volcanoes. I suppose it is…

When people think about volcanic mitigation, a lot of time is spent worrying about monitoring and science. There is nothing wrong with this as we need to know what the volcano has done in the past and what it is doing now to predict its future activity. However, a very important piece of the mitigation puzzle is education, because without educating the public of the dangers of the volcano, many times they will not listen to officials when time for evacuation comes (see Nevado del Ruiz, Colombia in 1985). Just a brief note, but today (November 13) is the 23rd anniversary of the disastrous lahar at Nevado del Ruiz in Colombia. Over 23,000 people died when a lahar, started by a relatively minor eruption of the volcano, swept down the river valleys the side of the edifice and destroyed Armero and Chinchina. The footage of rescue efforts after the lahar were devastating and heartbreaking (caution: linked video might not be for the faint of heart). Sadly, this disaster was mostly preventable as the citizens of these towns could have had at least an hour's warning to walk to higher ground, but the…
After the news of a sizable earthquake under Nevado del Huila, we can add Nevado del Ruiz to the list of volcanoes that have been shaken up recently. There was a M5.7 earthquake underneath Ruiz on Saturday (9/13), which is a pretty significant event. However, the earthquake was located at over 100 km depth, so likely it is not related to any magma movement at Ruiz. I will keep my eyes open for any reports of increasing unrest at Ruiz and at Huila in the coming days.
I've been following these rumblings for the last few months, but it looks like Colombia's Nevado del Huila is ramping into a new cycle of eruptions. Huila lives in the shadow of its more famous brethren Nevado del Ruiz and Galeras, both of which have had recent and tragic eruptions. Huila is not believed to have been active since the 1500s, but little research has been done on Huila (or any Colombian volcano beyond the aforementioned duo), so it might have had some fits and spasms in the last 500 years.  Reports from INGEOMINAS, the Colombian Geological Survey, say that Huila has been…
