A snow leopard pair (Panthera uncia), photographed at the Bronx zoo in 2006. I've been lucky enough to get a few halfway-decent photographs of snow leopards during my regular visits to the Bronx zoo, but they're absolute rubbish compared to the photography in the feature "Out of the Shadows" in the latest issue of National Geographic. Indeed, snow leopards are among my favorite felids and the photography by Steven Winter shows them at their best. As some of you may recall, about two months ago my apartment was robbed, my digital slr camera being one of the items that was stolen. Since then it has not been found by the police and I'm still struggling with my renter's insurance provider, but yesterday I got news of when my economic stimulus check was coming and this allowed me to purchase a brand new camera! After looking over some reviews (and keeping in mind what I could actually afford), I decided to go with the Nikon D60, going all-out for a kit that included a 18-55mm lens, a 55-200mm lens, and some other good stuff. I really want…

tags: Manhattan, NYC through my eye, photography, NYC Looking east along West 21st in Manhattan on a foggy evening (2 May 2008). Image: GrrlScientist 2008 [larger view]. Last week, I went to Seed Media Group's offices in Midtown Manhattan to hang out with two of my colleagues at ScienceBlogs, Jake (who lives in NYC) and Razib (who was visiting), as well as to talk with the Seed people and to drink some free beer. They buy great beer, not that undrinkable michelob light crap, by the way. When I left that evening, I was delighted to see that the city had become foggy and cool, but wasn't…
