Deputy Dog has a post detailing " href="http://deputy-dog.com/2008/01/04/5-unbelievably-cool-research-facilities/">5 unbelievably cool research facilities."  The one shown here is the Z Machine, at the Sandia National Lab in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  (Sandia Labs have more than one location.) src="http://www.sandia.gov/images/logo.gif" align="left" height="60" width="151">This device produces X-rays.  Sure, there are a lot of X-ray machines.  But only one can burn 290 trillion watts.  That is about 80 times the entire world's production of electricity, although it only lasts for a…
Previously, I posted a photo of href="http://scienceblogs.com/corpuscallosum/2006/07/noctilucent_clouds.php">noctilucent clouds, as seen from earth.  Now, NASA's Earth Observatory Newsroom presents us with href="http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Newsroom/NewImages/images.php3?img_id=17883">a photo of the same phenomenon, as seen from a satellite.   These clouds appear when ice-crystal-laden clouds for high in the atmosphere, high enough that the sun strikes the clouds while the ground is in darkness. If you have cats, and you put laundry on the bed, and leave the room for 15 seconds, this is what happens.  They own the place.
This is a brain MRI animation, showing sequential slices of the brain, from top to bottom.  It was a featured image at href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:User-FastFission-brain.gif">Wikipedia.   This was created by a Wikipedia user, href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Fastfission" title="User:Fastfission">Fastfission.  The explanation follows: Made from an href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/fMRI" class="extiw" title="w:fMRI">fMRI scan I had done. Goes from the top of my brain straight through to the bottom. That little dot that appears for a second on the upper-…

There is an artisan at href="http://www.pitbullarmory.com/" rel="tag">Pitbull Armory who makes armor for people, primarily for Society for Creative Anachronism events.  But he also makes armor for dogs.  And horses.  And he's "made history" by making armor for a squirrel. Here's the dog armor, on a dog named Spok: And here is the squirrel in armor: So if you are sick and tired of having your squirrel get harassed by the neighborhood cat, you know what to do.

Tilly is an eagle that has been trained to fly with a pair of video cameras.  The cameras weigh less than 30 grams and can transmit video signals more than a mile.   I gather this was shown on Aminal Planet, but you can see it on the Internet href="http://animal.discovery.com/convergence/spyonthewild/birdtech/birdtech.html">here.

There are just a few splashes of color left in the garden.

This is a photo from the space telescope Hubble, as shown on National Geographic's site.  The conglomeration of the two galaxies is known as Arp 87. href="http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/11/photogalleries/wip-week53/photo3.html">October 30, 2007—A new Hubble image offers the most detailed view yet of a pair of galaxies entwined in a graceful dance 300 million light-years away.
