scholarship

This afternoon, as I was busy working with graduate students and my daughter was napping at daycare, an email from AGU reminded me to renew my membership for next year. AGU is one of my two main societies and early renewal gives you a discount on electronic access to their articles, so I dutifully headed over to their site to pay up. Like all good organizations, before they'd let me pay their dues, AGU wanted to know if I would give a gift to one fund or another. Maybe I was feeling in a generous mood because I'd just come off good meetings with my grads, but I decided to browse the list of…
Funding is a difficult thing to obtain, but if you're a paleontologist with a published paper Paleonturology '07 is still accepting submissions. Dr. Vector, last year's winner for his paper "Postcranial Skeletal Pneumaticity in Sauropods and Its Implications for Mass Estimates," tipped me off about this one, and the entry requirements are very easy to meet. Anyone can enter this, student or professional, no matter what area of paleontology you're involved in, so if you've got something published in 2006 (or even know of a paper that you feel should be entered) be sure to act fast as the…

Indeed, John has asked me to put my money where my mouth is when it comes to throwing around words like "pseudoextinction" in reference to my blog, and hence here's a fitting meme about the "evolution" of Laelaps; In order to understand from whence Laelaps sprang, we need to travel backwards through the mists of time to the tumultuous year 2006. On October 18th, 2006 I wrote my first "real" science-oriented blog post about the lack of understanding about…
The finalists for the CollegeScholarship.com $10,000 scholarship have been announced, and SB's [I stand corrected, excuse the faux pas] Sb's own Shelley of Retrospectacle is one of them! Make sure that you go over to the voting page (the contest from here on out depends on votes from readers like you) and vote for Shelley (and tell all your friends too). Also of note are two other science bloggers in the long list of 20, The Big Room (and little things in it) and Anthropology.net. I was hoping to make the finals myself, but even though I didn't make it I have something to shoot for next time…
