Humans have an ability to recognize patterns, even if they're not really there, like the face of Jesus in a pizza or Elvis on the side of a Holstein. Apparently, a local lumberjack recognized something in a certain tree trunk and decided to flip it upside down and paint it blue in order to help passersby see the illusion. This little bit of "found art" is located less than two miles from my house and I had a good laugh when I first saw it:
Jesus on a pizza it ain't, but it sure is entertaining nonetheless.

Everybody knows the Margaret Thatcher Illusion. If you've forgotten about it, here's the best example I've found (from Schwaninger et al.1)
Both the top and bottom pairs are the same photos, but they look very different depending on whether they're upright or inverted. In the top pair (the…
Do you recognize the faces in this picture?
Sure you do -- you could recognize the authors of this blog anywhere, even upside-down. It might take you just a bit longer to realize that something isn't quite right with the picture. I'll show you what the problem is at the end of this post.
We've…
I was reminded of this illusion by the Seed Daily Zeitgeist yesterday. In order to get the full effect, I'll show you one set of photos here, and the rest of the post will be below the fold. The first are from Schwanginer et al. (2003)1:
They look pretty normal, right? Now look at these:

I'm the lone female in a house of men - when new housemate Phil moves in next month that will make six guys in my home and well, me. There are assorted female creatures on my farm - to be precise, one dog, two cats, two rabbits, 7 dairy goats, 12 ewes (seasonal) and about 40 female birds of…
I for one welcome our blue pants overlords.
It's all in the jeans.. I mean genes...
I'm pretty sure I've seen a whole page of suggestive nature pictures somewhere, but probably won't be able to find it. Meanwhile, here's a picture I took several years ago of some trees posed rather suggestively.

Many years ago a friend of mine was in the habit of drawing a certain little cartoon character that he had come up with. He drew them for me a few times, they were way cool and he wove a neat story around them. It is the kind of a memory that has a cocklebur shell. I've never been able to shake it.
Many years later, I am exploring the banks of a creek in Wyoming, and pretending to fish, when I come upon a piece of driftwood that is preCISEly like my friends cartoon. It is a very big deal, to me, but it is not to the population of the planet minus one or two.
I am perfectly content and feel quite fully informed by taking the view that such a piece of wood would exist had I never met my friend.
I just have one question about the picture of the . . . err . . . crotch. Am I looking at the actual jeans of Jesus, or are the genes of Jesus in these pants?
and I get away with wood would. bonus.
