It is friday morning, and happy birthday PZ!
So, we approach the mighty iPod and we ask... what does the iPod have to say about PZ?
Whoosh goes the randomizer.
Whoosh.
- The Covering: Wie? Wie? Wie? - Mozart (Magic Flute)
- The Crossing: Frosty the Snowman - Cranberry Singers
- The Crown: In the Bleak Midwinter - King's Choir
- The Root: Englishman in New York - Sting
- The Past: Search and Destroy - the Stooges
- The Future: Homenaje, Pour le Tombeau de Claude Debussy
- The Questioner: Skip to My Lou
- The House: Apollo 7 - Stravinsky
- The Inside: This Guitar Says Sorry (Alt Version) - Billy Bragg
- The Outcome: Maístjarnan - Edda
#11 is Give me Novocaine - Green Day and #12 is Scenes From Childhood: Foreign Lands and People - for those who believe in the zodiacal interpretation of the iPod.
Wow, mighty is the iPod. Myers is made.
The Outcome is the biggest surprise. It is the "Star of May" - a famous poem by nobel laureate Halldór Laxness - with the tune written by my uncle... it is nominally a love poem, an ode to a girl by a poor working boy. promising a better life, and the tune is true to this. It is a popular wedding song.
But it is actually a call to revolution, and the reference is to first of May as international workers day.
Beautiful poem and song.
As always, the Key as explained by Sean
MaÃstjarnan
à hve létt er þitt skóhljóð
ó hve leingi ég beið þÃn,
það er vorhret á glugga,
napur vindur sem hvÃn,
en ég veit eina stjörnu,
eina stjörnu sem skÃn,
og nú loks ertu komin,
þú ert komin til mÃn.
Ãað eru erfiðir tÃmar,
það er atvinnuþref,
ég hef ekkert að bjóða,
ekki ögn sem ég gef,
nema von mÃna og lÃf mitt
hvort ég vaki eða sef,
þetta eitt sem þú gafst mér
það er alt sem ég hef.
En à kvöld lýkur vetri
sérhvers vinnandi manns,
og á morgun skÃn maÃsól,
það er maÃsólin hans,
það er maÃsólin okkar,
okkar einÃngarbands,
fyrir þér ber ég fána
þessa framtÃðarlands.
Literal translation: there is no way I can hack the rhyme tonight and it only half-scans
Star of May
Oh how light is your tread
Oh how long I have waited
the spring rain drums on the window
a bitter wind that howls
but I know of one star
a star that shines
and now finally you came
you came to me
times are harder than ever
there's no work to be had
I have nothing to offer
not a speck I have to give
but my hope and my life
whether awake or asleep
the one thing you gave me
that is all that I have
But tonight winter's over
for every working man
and tomorrow shines May sun
that May sun is his
that May sun is ours
our sign of union ties
for you I carry the flag
of that promised land
