I'm going to be less active for a few days. Going to Montreal (for the first time) for the 17th Conference on Computers, Freedom, and Privacy. I'll be moderating a panel on the new landscape of online advertising, featuring Microsoft's Kim Howell, the Center for Digital Democracy's Jeff Chester, and Mike Zaneis of the Interactive Advertising Bureau. There may be some denialism afoot, in which case I'll project a card or two on the screen.
Anyone have any restaurant suggestions?

I'll be attending upcoming Canadian Library Association National Forum, a kind of sunset conference as CLA reimagines and recreates itself. The idea is to take the pulse of Canadian librarians on the important issues in the library-related landscape. I'll be curating the session on Canada's…

I looked out my window this morning in Melbourne--after sleeping off jet lag--and saw seven hot air balloons in the sky. You would never see something like that over a U.S. city.
It was a pretty good introduction to the awesome country that I have the fortune of visiting for the next 10 days.

I don't want to hear about how I really should've bought…
Schwartz's deli for the smoked meat. Also make sure you get some real Montreal bagels, from a place like REAL Bagel or St. Viateur Bagel Bakery on 263 St. Viateur Ouest. They're smuggled all over Canada and beyond. Steamies & fries is also a great greasy treat. And just enjoy the city, the most beautiful in North America.
I'm partial to Schwartz's Deli.
Yes, Schwartz's deli is on my list! It sounds great! I'll add St. Viateur...being on the West Coast, I rarely get a good bagel!
For elegant Chinese fusion, try Zen: it's in the Hotel Omni on Sherbrooke (at University, IIRC).
For a traditonal Qubecois meal try La Binerie Mont-Royal. Reasonably priced at 367 Mt-Royal avenue East, north-west of St-Denis street.
For French food off the beaten path but well worth it - Restaurant Sans Menu on Notre Dame Ouest and Rose de Lima. I used to go there once a week when I lived around the corner and it is truly amazing.
