Ahnold Takes a Fall

When Arnold Schwarzenegger was running for governor of California, I spent a great deal of time laughing at the reaction of the conservative rabble to his campaign. It was hilarious watching so many of them swoon at the thought of Ahnold as a Republican governor, and even more so watching them defend him for the very same thing that they accused Clinton of (and rightfully so in both cases, I might add). Anyone with an IQ over room temperature would know that if you changed only a single thing about the situation - have Schwarzenegger declare as a Democrat instead of a Republican - and those very same people would have gone ballistic in their opposition to him. They would have proclaimed him a drug-using, orgy-attending, baby-killing, fag-loving Hollywood liberal, not to mention a damned foreigner married to an infernal Kennedy.

Ah, but now it seems that the honeymoon is almost over. As the WorldNutDaily reports, some attentive uber-patriots noticed that at Reagan's funeral, as the rest of the crowd recited the pledge of allegiance, Schwarzenegger stood silently. Need it be said that the huddled masses of the right wing have reacted negatively? You can read the reactions on the above page. They're more interesting if you read them with a thick German accent.

I love getting these "action alerts" from religious right legal groups. At least once a week I get a breathless, hyperbolic email designed to push the emotional buttons of their followers and get them worked up into an unsightly froth. The Thomas More Law Center's latest news alert takes aim at an…
The latest nonsense at StopTheACLU is this post written by "Jay" about a high school student in Florida who is suing because he says he was berated by a teacher for refusing to stand for the pledge of allegiance. The hyper-patriots have been fuming at this student for weeks, calling him a "punk kid…
Last week about 50 Boulder High School students walked out of class rather than recite the Pledge of Allegiance with the words "one nation, under God" in it. They wanted to recite their own version, cleansed of the offending phrase. I have a better idea, but first here's what happened in Boulder:…
I really did not think I would live to see the day when a major political party in the U.S. would find it necessary to add a woman to the ticket in order to win the presidency. It's a shame I can't be at all happy about the particular party and woman making history. However, if you will recall, I…

I wish they would do away with the Pledge of Allegiance in the public schools. It's just another way for one group of people to single out other people for some kind of social abuse.
