Coach K has turned down the Lakers' offer to coach in the NBA and decided to stay at Duke University. According to news reports out of LA, not only did they offer him $8 million a year ($2 million more than Phil Jackson made even after winning 3 NBA titles with the Lakers), they also offered him the post of team president, which would mean total control over all basketball decisions (something Jackson never had), AND a 5% ownership stake in the team, one of the most valuable in all of sports. No wonder he was tempted to take it. But in the end, he couldn't leave the university he loves. Good choice, and I think the Lakers should be happy it turned out this way too. Rudy Tomjanovich will be a better coach than K would have been in that situation.
Coach K Stays at Duke!
Okay, time for a basketball break. First and foremost, leave this page immediately, go read the Sports Guy's draft diary, and remind yourself why this guy is the best sportswriter on the planet today.
If you're looking for something substantive today, you best move along to the next blog. I'm just not motivated to write anything serious today.
The Lakers-Magic game last night was quite the thrill-ride: it's now the morning after, and my pulse has only begun to return to its resting rate.
Listening to a live interview with Coach K tonight on SportsCenter, it seems as if Coach K is happy with his decision. I particularly liked his reasons for staying -- and obviously I'm paraphrasing -- he said he was still in love with Duke. Good for you, Coach K.
