Jason Kuznicki has a couple interesting posts up this morning. The first one explains why he thought Kerry's naming of Mary Cheney was crass. His position is far more reasonable than the nonsense being offered up by the outraged conservatives who have suddenly discovered their need to defend her against the mere mention of her name while simultaneously supporting policies and positions that demean her life. I can certainly understand the argument that it was unnecessary to mention her by name, and the argument that he should not have tried to speak on her behalf. Those are reasonable positions to hold. The notion that he was trying to appeal to bigotry by pointing out what everyone already knew is so stupid it hardly deserves comment.
The second post has a hilarious exchange between Tim Russert and Peter Coors, wherein Coors declares that there is no contradiction between his opposition to gay marriage and his company's sponsorship of a gay fetish ball. His explanation is nothing short of breathtaking. And Jason has an important point to make, I think, about the thinking of the religious right on this subject. Despite their vitriol aimed at things like gay pride parades, the fact is that they love such displays because it supports their gay-people-as-hypersexualized-hedonists motif. What they really hate and consider a threat are gays that don't fit that stereotype, people like Jason and Scott, or Ace and Terra, who are in committed relationships and don't behave like sideshow freaks. As he puts it,
When Coors Brewing, an organization with a long and very poor record on gay issues, suddenly sponsors a raunch fetish party, they are valuing us for who we are. But when we ourselves demand to be treated as ordinary people--That's an attack on the traditional family.
Go read the whole thing. And then stay and look around. If you aren't reading his blog on a daily basis, you're missing out on some of the most insightful material out there.

I read Kuznicki's first post referenced and found it somewhat silly. I posted the following comment
Sorry, all's fair in love and politics.
As far as I'm concerned, I have no problem with what Kerry did. As far as I'm concerned, it was a reminder to the "fam'ly values" crowd that the current homophobic administration isn't really into "fam'ly values" at all--they would deny one of their own fam'ly members equal rights.
BTW, I'm amazed that few people seem to have reacted to the fact that Bush lied in his answer to the same question. He lied about advocating "tolerance" for gay people. Some of us remember what he said in support of Texas's homo-only sodomy law while he was governor of Texas. That's hardly a sign of tolerance. Why is there no outrage from gay bloggers about that?
