Back in Business

As I download the 263 emails that have built up since Thursday evening when I first lost power at my house, let me announce my return. It's been a crazy few days. As some of you likely know, my part of Michigan got nailed with a really bizarre weather pattern on Wednesday and Thursday and it knocked out power to pretty much the entire area. The power finally came back on last night but I didn't get cable TV or internet back until a few minutes ago. In the intervening 3 days, we had temps below zero and 30 mph winds. I got the hell out of dodge and went and stayed my buddy Jeff in Grand Rapids for the weekend rather than try and endure that. I have a fireplace and gas stove, so I could have survived, but without running water, and hence no showers or flushing the toilet, that just didn't sound too appealing to me. But now I'm back, with power and a connection to the outside world again. And as luck would have it, none of my pipes froze either. So crisis over and back to normalcy.

I hate you, Comcast. I really do. My hatred of Comcast also explains the paucity of activity on this blog over the last few days. You see, over the weekend, I moved to a larger house, and I've had no Internet access other than Panera's or Starbucks for the last three days. Before that, I had lined…
As you may have already guessed, things are beginning to normalize. We just finished moving in the rest of the furniture to our new place this past weekend, a cute little house in Midtown Atlanta. From our street you can see downtown, which is beautiful at night. Apparently, the previous owner's…
Anyhoo... The week before we left for Atlanta, Heather and I stayed with my parents, who drove back up to PA to help us load our moving truck. The day before we got there, it snowed about a foot, making it impossible to even get the Subarus up there, much less the truck. We had to hire someone to…
We're just about at the one year anniversary of the Northeastern power outage that had many people out this way out for a week or two last year, and what's the forecast up at our place? Snow, followed by sleet and icy rain and more ice. This seems like a recipe for trouble. Being of a vaguely…

Great to have you back, Ed! Glad nothing too awful happened to the house while you were gone, there's nothing like coming back home to a foot of water on the floor.

It almost bothers me that i miss this site when it is down. Otherwise, so glad you are back. Any comment on the three year prison sentence handed down to Irving for demonstrating too much freedom of expression in Austria?

I would hate to have lived in pre-electricity society.

Welcome back, Ed.

Over here in Butte we had temperatures from 30 to 40 below zero.

Our pipes here in the office are frozen solid right now and we're waiting on a plumber to come out tomorrow to get them thawed out.

I was out driving in the snow at about 28 below on Friday evening to the grocery store and back and it was pretty... interesting...

I walked home in the thunderstorm we had. Nothing like walking in a blizzard and having a muted thunderclap make you jump. Beautiful, but I was soaked by the time I got home. Crazy Michigan weather.
