DeLay Resigns from Congress

Tom DeLay is going to announce this morning that he is resigning from Congress. But gosh, I thought God himself had appointed DeLay to "represent righteousness in government"? If that's true - and DeLay didn't deny it when Scarborough said it - wouldn't it be blasphemy to refuse to carry out the role God appointed him for? Ah, what tangled webs of absurdity are weaved by huckster manipulating religion for political gain. Here's my favorite part of the article:

"He has served our nation with integrity and honor," said Majority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, who succeeded DeLay in his leadership post earlier this year.

To paraphrase the great Inigo Montoya - I do not think those words mean what you think they mean.

Talking Points Memo suggests that since DeLay already won the Republican nomination and can only be disqualified if he dies, is convicted of a felony, or leaves the state, that he will likely move to Virginia to allow the Republicans to run a new candidate for his seat. A felony would also do the trick, but that might not come quickly enough.

A move to Virginia would also apparently allow him to convert his re-election fund into a legal defense fund.

My favorite part of all this is that he claims to be doing this because he's afraid of dragging down the party. He's only doing this because he doesn't want to get his ass kicked by a democrat - which would have likely been the outcome of the race.
