Terror in the kitchen

Someday people will look back on the period of terrorism hysteria with wonder, maybe even wry amusement. There are terrorists, to be sure. Some of them work for sovereign states and are part of their military or police. Some of them work for "non state" entities. Those are the ones governments like to call terrorists. Terminology is important, I guess. Governments and terrorists have several things in common. Both have the objective of terrorizing and frightening people as a matter of policy. That's why we call them terrorists. Governments add the extra fillip of frightening their own citizens that there is potentially a terrorist under every bed (presumably giving the Bush administration a reason to invade your bedroom). It keeps the citizenry in line and ready to obey. For both the weapons of choice are guns and bombs. Governments have bigger guns and bigger bombs but it amounts to much the same thing. Neither likes nor uses chemical weapons to any extent. Indeed if you are going to be felled by chemicals in the US or Europe, the source will almost certainly not be a terrorist attack but an industrial or transportation accident.

Or maybe a Thai restaurant:

What seemed to be a possible chemical strike on London's Soho district Monday was instead smoke from chilies being cooked up at a Thai restaurant, the London Times reported.

Irritating smoke floated over the area for three hours, driving pedestrians to seek cover and forcing emergency road closures and evacuations of nearby shops and residences. A hazardous materials team was deployed to find the source of the smoke.

"The first we knew about it was at about 4:30 in the afternoon when the fire brigade came. They led us out to where the streets had been cordoned off and we waited there for about three hours," said Supranee Yodmuang, a waitress at the Thai Cottage restaurant. Workers returned to find a restaurant door smashed in and emergency personnel waiting outside, she said.

Emergency responders had found that the smoke was emanating from a pot containing 9 pounds of dried chilies to be used in super-spicy nam prik pao dip eaten with prawn crackers (Global Security Newswire)

Someday people will look back on the period of terrorism hysteria with wonder, maybe even wry amusement. I can't wait.

More like this

I really would have liked to have sampled this Thai restaurant's nam prik pao. Maybe next time.
What everyone seems to remember about 9/11 was how beautiful and clear the day was. Certainly it was lovely in Kansas, and across the Eastern seaboard, the sun shone brightly. As days go, it seemed like a good one. I woke up, as always, to NPR's Morning Edition. Who knows what exactly they…
Man, it's getting to the point where a fellow can't even build a death ray or an island fortress shaped like a skull without someone getting pissy about it. Take this account, for instance, of a few people just playing around with skeletons and lab coats: A group of students had their 'Mad…
This is our 10th post on the anthrax attacks. Will it be our last? Yes, if the FBI has anything to say about it. They are closing the case. A case they messed up pretty thoroughly from the outset but now want us to believe they've solved, even though the culprit they fingered, Dr. Bruce Ivins, a…

I've done something similar. I like to sear meats after I've browned them in a salt/sugar/garlic mixture. The sugar tends to carbonize a bit and it smokes up like crazy.

But it's good stuff! Pork, chicken and beef cuts all benefit from brines from time to time.

The other is when I make steaks. I'll pan sear them after dosing them liberally with spicy seasoning mixes. The thing is you don't want to be breathing near the stove when I do this. I learned once the hard way.

I only hope that the fervor dies down before it reaches the heights the communist hysteria did in the 50s.

On second thought, maybe it's already surpassed that...

I for one dont think its hysteria, especially in light of current events. If this forced the evacuation of an area under any circumstances then its a viable weapon.

Just like a runway deprivation weapon knocks a 12 foot deep hole into the concrete. It deprives you of the use of your facilities be it chili or bombs.

Tear gas uses ketones. Anyone want that on the burner? It burns your eyes and lungs, chilis do the same thing. Its an undirected munition.

I doubt that anyone will ever look back at the events of late and call it hysteria. Its more like afterwards they will see it was interdicted before it came to public attention.

I CAN wait.

MRK you obviously missed the point about what is the hysteria. It is not the fact that people responded to something that might have been a chemical spill accident, it is the incessant chanting of "It's the terrorists, it's the terrorists, they hate is because we're free, it's the terrorists" that is pure hysteria.

How come when I say I get this idea that no one gets it that I do get it? Who C., Revere IMO pretty much dismisses the terrorist threat in the US. Hmmm... on another post we find a threat about anthrax being rattled around and that we shouldnt prepare for it with vaccines. Do I get to behead him on the square if he is wrong? No, and wouldnt think of it either. But that is how the Katrina thing was handled. The law got in the way of reality. Wasnt the Federal Governments responsibility to handle it until Blanco signed the order. She did, only three days post of the storm. Lawton Chiles...Another Democrat did, three days post of Andrew. Hmmm.... another Bush Bash op? Maybe... If we have the vax and it happens they can say we were prepared. Is it effective? Who knows? At least we prepared the best way we knew how.

Congress is the one who appropriates the money for this stuff and that includes anthrax, chili peppers and if its so designated as a threat...bad dreams. We HAVE to respond to all threats as terrorist threats because the one funny guy might not be so funny. In fact if it were me, I would send a dummy terrorist in every couple of days to numb the system and then I would take them.

Case in point is that absolutely retarded MIT student who strapped on a fake bomb to her chest at Boston Logan and was immediately arrested for it. MIT? I guess the admission requirements have dropped. Anyway, it could have been one just as easy. Just takes motivation. Ever seen Swordfish? Thats a really good description of how a shredder works. I would normally use a Claymore and face it towards an enemy, but walking into a crowded airport does just as good. Nothing stopping them until they get into the terminal and then only slightly. Stand in line then poof when you are ready. Take your bag too and load that one up. Set it off with your switch. They might get one, but not the other. As for the bags, they dont scan it as they should BEFORE it goes into the terminal. Dumb... But I might be wrong. Base defense was a big thing with me in the military. I would fire a shot into someones head if they approached and looked bulky when it was 98 degrees. Then I would say stop or I'll shoot.

The New Jersey arrest of people with bombs and bomb making materials. If you know anything about bombs, the best ones are made by making multi-stage ones. Thats how a H-bomb is set up. But for lower than city killer or regional status you start with a small bomb that sets off something like alcohol/gasoline/liquid hydrogen which in turns sets off fertilizer and diesel fuel. Had to give it McVeigh, he did learn his stuff in the Oklahoma City bombing. The above is exactly how he did it although the assertion was that he used a 12 gauge shell into black powder and then into a barrel with diesel and fertilizers, surrounded of course by diesel and fertilizer. Ah, we will never know.

Yousef Ramzi, a New York businessman was the father of the first attack on the WTC's. Little beknownst to most he had a full load of cyanide on the van too. It vaporized in the explosion and may have supressed it just enough not to topple it. Clinton had Osama and let him go... He had rights and we didnt have "enough" on him post of the WTC first attack. But had it not been for a beam, the WTC's would have gone down on his watch. Do I get to behead him in the street on Saturday morning? No, but ....

A man of Middle Eastern descent the other day walked in with guns in hands into a mall and was either nuts or wanted to die in Michigan. No shots were fired but I think that Richard "Shoe Bomber" Reed had a cousin. Both seemed equally dumb and ineffective. But indeed both were terrorist attacks.

They blew up a double decker in London last year with a shredder. Got two Tennesseans, killed quite a few.

They also did the subway in Madrid. A lot of people died.

Drove a car into the entrance of an Irish airport. Or was it Brit?. Doesnt matter. It was done and I am just surprised they didnt have it loaded with an explosive. But thats just me.

These are fairly recent events and they are where you find them. Not so many here, but now they know they CAN hit us and hard. That emboldens them to no end. Want to take bets on whether we get hit again.

Revere is right though. Likely mathematically your chances are nearly zero of being in the right place at the wrong time. I dont think its hysteria or hysterical of someone to prepare for it. We will catch some fish when we go fishing, but not all of them. Interdiction, interdiction, interdiction. Haul them to Gitmo and gitmo information. I think my position on "torture" is well documented. If I had an inkling that they were going to do even a firecracker I might do some absolutely terrible things to them. Talk? Yeah they would talk. Might not get anything but if I did and it turned them into a blubbering mess in the process, then so what?

I always get this "This is not what we are". Okay, thats acceptable um....about 8 years ago now. Its todays world.

What would you do to stop a WTC from happening?

I guess we might be a bit jumpy and for obvious reasons.

Ques: "What would you do to stop a WTC from happening?" I do often think back to those late months of 2001... For me, in Oz-no-marriage-for-adult-queers-tralia, it felt like average folk sitting in trains, cars, buses, class rooms, stores, etc, were... Trancelike asleep!?! Indeed, the kneejerk reactions from AmericanOz, etc, governments were so over the bloody top and based in BS, it does feel a bit like an absurd parody of "Reds Under The Beds". The real chemical terrorists are those who've created a Western culture in which vast sections of the populations are psychologically "asleep" on anti-depressants. I really wish average folk would begin eating correctly, exercising and altering addiction patterns to include nicotine chewing gum, etc... Anything to wake people up and begin thinking 'bout how remaining humanity is gonna manage to work together post transgenic pathogen pandemic.

Does it really matter how you get killed?. Drunk driver, drive by shooting, tainted food, unsafe consumer product, or a foreign terrorist.

I mean, all of these things are bad and in a perfect world would be stopped.

But do we go back to the prohibition to prevent drunk driving?

Do we do more to regulate and inspect food and consumer products?

Do we prevent individuals from owning guns so they stop getting shot?.

No. Because in life you have to accept a certain amount of risk and we have decided that for whatever reasons, we will live with these risks.

To put things in perspective, more people in the US are killed in their bathtub each year than people killed worldwide by foreign terrorists, a few hundred is the typical number. We lose over 70,000 people per year due to highway accidents and guns.

So why is it we must change our way of life to prevent another attack? If they attack us because they hate our way of life, and we change our way of life to be more like them, they have won. The America that existed on 9/11 no longer exists. We are a nation of war criminals and terrorists who have killed more civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan in our efforts to be safe than 200 - 9/11 attacks.

Cost vs benefit. Risk vs Reward. You need to balance them, and then you can do what GWB says he does best, and decide.

After 9/11, we needed a President who would stand up and say that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself. But the Supreme Court ensured that the man America voted as President was not elected, due to the theft of the Florida electoral votes in a state run by the Presidents brother, and the rest is history.

Certainly we needed to make changes after 9/11. Yeah, airport doors should be able to be locked securely, passengers carrying utility knives on a plane are not a good thing, the FBI and CIA should talk to each other, firemen should have radios that can work in high rise buildings and be able to communicate with police (problem exposed in 1993 after the first attack, great job Rudy), and guys like OBL should be taken out and damn the consequences of international opinion.

Oh and by the way, Bin Laden has not been caught, because Pakistan might be upset if we get him, and might become unstable. Nor have those who were behind the Anthrax attacks. But we got Saddam, and he had absolutely nothing to do with 9/11, but he had evidence showing the US governments role and his Daddy's role in the chemical weapons attacks on the Kurds during the Iran war, what some feel was his biggest crime. The trial that got Saddam hung did not included charges over the Kurds he killed with chemical weapons. Wonder why?

WTC was a tragedy, no doubt. But consider, we had 2 towers which the Port Authority had tried demolish (asbestos and fire insulation issues) but was prevented in doing so by the courts, due to concerns about asbestos. So WTC 1 and 2 would have had to be dismantled from the top down. Fortunately they found a sucker to assume a lease on these 30 year old problem twins for 99 years, 6 months before 9/11, he also owned WTC 7, and all his property was very well insured. The loan made by the bank owned by one of Bush's brothers (Marvin) which they quickly securitized (he also had previously run the security company for WTC which was heavily invested by Kuwaitis and Saudi's, left them in December 2000).

Yes, Larry and his pals did very well for themselves, strange that only his WTC property collapsed as it did, the other buildings also had fires and damage but remained standing, how lucky he was, made a ton of money and still has the lease to the site, which will have a new building(s) under his management for another 90 years. It was so good for all 3 buildings to basically dissolve into dust like that for Larry, a historical first. Imagine having to take those 3 buildings down w/o controlled demolition after the attacks, it would have cost a lot and been an eye sore and a nuisance for a decade.

GWB and the neocons that wrote the PNAC report, the one saying we needed a new Pearl Harbour to get support to rebuild the military, well they got a big increase in their defense budget and got to do Iraq, and perhaps will do Iran, and a never ending War on Terror to replace the Cold War . So for some folks, 9/11 worked out well. Not so sure about those who placed the PUT options that bet AA and UA prices would go down right by 9/11, apparently they are being protected because there is no evidence they were "irregular" trades. But some of them never bothered to collect on the millions they made. Strange, guess they felt guilty about profiting on such a tragedy.

For the 3000 dead on 9/11 and sick first responders, and the almost 5000 dead in Iraq/Afghanistan including security contractors, not to mention the tens of thousands wounded, not so good.

As for America? May she Rest In Peace,
Born July 4, 1776. Died September 11, 2001.

Our founding fathers would not recognize what we have become. But I guess for those who value their safety more than their liberty and morality, life is still good, and we still have our name.

@Revere:
My apologies for feeding the troll. I didn't know that MRK was that kind of nut. I'll do 1 more answer to him because the answer is simple.

"What would you do to stop a WTC from happening?"

Stop being a nation that is a bully. That would have stopped Bin Laden from having had the training, funding and logistics required to pull of a stunt like that. The same Bin Laden hit the WTC because the USA was (in his eyes) defiling the holy places in Saudi Arabia by not leaving after gulf war 1 was done.

By Who Cares (not verified) on 06 Oct 2007 #permalink

Hiya, Jonny. What gives in the land of OZ? Nice comment. Remember to wear when going in for bear....

Who-That comment about America being a bully came up time and again after WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. If you feel bullied wherever you are then maybe we should just get someone to drop your house on you. Then you can affirm that we were being bullies. Tell it to the undertaker.

If you think for one minute that we are going to sit back and by and get hit time and again you are nuts. Same for the UK. We are much different than the EU. We wont just sit back and take the hit after hit. We are going to do something about it right or wrong. If the CIA cooked the books and gave them to Bush then thats the way the mop flops. We know Bin Laden was using Afghanistan as a springboard along witht he Taliban. They were actively trying to destabilize Pakistan.

There havent been any more attacks since we have gone to proactive retaliation rather than retribution or revenge. So far. I wouldnt want to bet that it doesnt happen.

Re: the assertion that we were out defiling holy places. So by being in country at the Saudi request wasnt in your eyes and your compatriots acceptable? It sounds to me like you are siding with terrorists or you are at least willing to negotiate with them at the threat of terrorism. Fear. You are goddamn right its fear. Fear of what a nuke going off in Boston, New York, DC... LA. Or the poor mans nuke-chemical weapons.

Also WHO, even two very lefty newspapers paid to have the recounts done as they do after every election Bush won Florida and not by the Supreme Court. Katharine Harris followed the law and that required her to invalidate the election, or certify it. Without proof of fraud (mind they did indict and convict that mouthy election commission woman in Palm Beach county of election fraud) they can only certify it. The Democrat State Attorney tried to use his office to influence the election, he was indicted I do believe. And then there is the deal in Miami where a Democrat tried to lock himself into a room with the cards alone while Republican election officers were trying to get in to stop him. Too bad we have a media huh? All the Supreme Court did was to rule that the count was to stop and that the election was certified that Bush won by K. Harris as required by the law... Something you ought to familiarize yourself with. Frankly I was amazed that Palm Beach County which was heavily Democrat by a 1.5 to 1 Republican ratio had 56,000 more votes than there were registered voters. In otherwords pal, they had a 125 to 150% voter turn out along with 56,000 additional votes! I wonder where you can come up with an answer for that...Oh, those votes by the way were 100% en toto for Gore.

Here is how you do it. Instead of giving one ballot to a voter, you give him two or three. You slip it into the machine and you push the pin thru. With three of them in though you cant push it. The first one (chad) breaks, the second might break partially (dangling chad) and the third "dimples". As one of the volunteer election officials here I got a large primer on what can happen in an election. The new machines allowed a correct vote in the last two elections and unfortunately for you and Mikey Moore, there was no news to skew. He went home.

PFT I have no idea whether you have a drug problem or not or you are just too young to remember. I might remind you that we were attacked in Africa while Clinton was in office and here in the US. The goddamn terrorists tried to drop the WTC's on his watch with bomb in a van. So where were you when this little tidbit was on the news, kindergarten?

Putting it into perspective. Those acts you describe for the better part are a part of American society as we know it. Very few go hunting in the US for their fellow man in a bathtub. You could be blown up in that bathtub though.

Tell you what, there is a Gulf Air flight leaving every day for the Middle East. Pick a country..go live in it. Be sure to tell them that you are on their side and that they just need to keep up the pressure. If anything make sure they know you are an American.

Gore? Fear itself? How bout a 10 or 15 meg nuke? Wouldnt have gotten that from the Manchurian Candidate is your assertion. I fully disagree.

Both of you guys need a wake up call. There are all sorts of allegations but unless you ascribe to Charlie Sheen's thinking you are required to have proof. It would be a much bigger cover up than even the Kennedy killing if the WTC's had been dropped by someone here.
