Freethinker Sunday Sermonette: election pastorale

Let's stray from the Path of Wrighteousness and listen to some other spiritual leaders close to one of the Presidential Candidates. I don't know who Senator Clinton's God Guru is (I'm guessing that depends on what is most expedient at the moment; the Great God of Gas Tax Holidays seems favored as I write) but we know who Senator McCain courted. He's twice as spiritual as Senator Obama because he has at least two big time religious leaders on board, Pastors Hagee and Parsley (NB: Parsley is his name, not his position in the Living Kingdom). Here are some quotable Words of Wisdom from the two of them, courtesy Open Left:

1. "Do you know the difference between a woman with PMS and a snarling Doberman pinscher? The answer is lipstick. Do you know the difference between a terrorist and a woman with PMS? You can negotiate with a terrorist."
- Pastor John Hagee in his book What Every Man Wants in a Woman (Charisma House, 2005)

2. "The Quran teaches that [all Muslims have a mandate to kill Christians and Jews]. Yes, it teaches that very clearly."
-Pastor John Hagee

3. "I believe that the Hurricane Katrina was, in fact, the judgment of God against the city of New Orleans...I believe that New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God, and they are -- were recipients of the judgment of God for that...There was to be a homosexual parade there on the Monday that the Katrina came. And the promise of that parade was that it was going to reach a level of sexuality never demonstrated before in any of the other Gay Pride parades.... The Bible teaches that when you violate the law of God, that God brings punishment sometimes before the day of judgment."
-Pastor John Hagee

4. "The military will have difficultly recruiting healthy and strong heterosexuals for combat purposes. Why? Fighting in combat with a man in your fox hole that has AIDS or is HIV positive is double jeopardy."
- Pastor John Hagee on Don't Ask Don't Tell

5. "[Gay marriage] will open the door to incest, to polygamy, and every conceivable marriage arrangement demented minds can possibly conceive. If God does not then punish America, He will have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah."
- Pastor John Hagee

6. "It is impossible to call yourself a Christian and defend homosexuality. There is no justification or acceptance of homosexuality.... Homosexuality means the death of society because homosexuals can recruit, but they cannot reproduce."
- Pastor John Hagee

7. "Only a Spirit-filled woman can submit to her husband's lead. It is the natural desire of a woman to lead through feminine manipulation of the man...Fallen women will try to dominate the marriage. The man has the God-given role to be the loving leader of the home."
- Pastor John Hagee in his book What Every Man Wants in a Woman (Charisma House, 2005)

8. "I cannot tell you how important it is that we understand the true nature of Islam, that we see it for what it really is. In fact, I will tell you this: I do not believe our country can truly fulfill its divine purpose until we understand our historical conflict with Islam. I know that this statement sounds extreme, but I do not shrink from its implications. The fact is that America was founded, in part, with the intention of seeing this false religion destroyed, and I believe September 11, 2001, was a generational call to arms that we can no longer ignore."
- Rod Parsley in Silent No More (Charisma House, 2005)

9. "Gay sexuality inevitably involves brutal physical abusiveness and the unnatural imposition of alien substances into internal organs, orally and anally, that inevitably suppress the immune system and heighten susceptibility to disease."
- Rod Parsley

10. "Only 1 percent of the homosexual population in America will die of old age. The average life expectancy for a homosexual in the United States of America is 43 years of age. A lesbian can only expect to live to be 45 years of age. Homosexuals represent 2 percent of the population, yet today they're carrying 60 percent of the known cases of syphilis."
- Rod Parsley

Want to hear their own words? So much to choose from. Here's a sample. These are longish clips, to be sure, but there is a certain horrible fascination to watching them. Like a terrible wreck on the freeway.

John Hagee:

This may be the first and last time I ever agree with that monomaniacal nutcase, Bill Donohue of the far right Catholic League, but here it is:

Now Rod Parsley and his disciple, John McCain:

OK. Let's let Parsley talk.

These guys make Jeremiah Wright look like Dr. Phil.

More like this

As the media circus over Jeremiah Wright continues, it should give us pause that the media hasn't decided to focus on John McCain and his embrace of a wide range of religious bigots. Although McCain once called these men "agents of intolerance" in 2000, he has since done a total flip-flop and…
What happens when an end-of-times pastor meets a CNN bobble-head? One thing is for certain both science and rationality will be chucked out the window. John Hagee, head of a Texas mega-church had some truly crazy things to say on Glenn Beck's Friday evening show (October 12, 2007). You can get the…
Disasters do bring the whackos out of the woodwork. I've already cited a few of them, but how about these guys? I can't get my head wrapped around this kind of reasoning. Here's the first one: Chuck Kelley is president of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, with facilities located near the…
Max Blumenthal visits Palin's church, and discusses her endorsement by a latter-day Cotton Mather: Muthee gained fame within Pentecostal circles by claiming that he defeated a local witch, Mama Jane, in a great spiritual battle, thus liberating his town from sin and opening its people to the spirit…

The difference is that angry black men are scary and everyone expects Republicans to have misogynists and homophobes supporting their campaign. We all know that McCain is too much of a maverick to ever be swayed by such people.

They say that God created Man
As part of an enormous plan,
And did so in His image, cos he loves us, every one.
When men of God discriminate
And treat their fellow men with hate
They do so with the knowledge its what Jesus would have done.
When righteous men, in righteous ways
Hate atheists, or Jews, or gays,
Or Muslims, pagans, redheads, southpaws, foreigners, or Voodoo
Although at first it may seem odd
But clearly, youve created God
In your own image, when you see he hates the same folks you do.

You can safely assume you have created God in your own image when it turns out that God hates the same people you do. Annie Lamott

2. "The Quran teaches that [all Muslims have a mandate to kill Christians and Jews]. Yes, it teaches that very clearly."
-Pastor John Hagee

As one who has read the Hadith and two translations of the Qur'an, I can vouch for this statement. I, frankly, don't see how those of us who are so against the violent religion of Evangelical Christianity cannot get behind condemnations of Qur'an-inspired Islamic violence.

The Qur'an and the Hadith have all the violence of an Eli Roth screenplay but at least Eli doesn't tell people that Hostel is a guide for how to live.

The rest of those statements: pure garbage. These men are homophobic misogynistic asswipes of the worst calibre.

The fact is that America was founded, in part, with the intention of seeing this false religion destroyed

This, however, is pure bullshit.

I've mentioned at Ed Brayton's blog that I live about 5 miles away from Rod Parsley, but that was a while ago.

Parsley owns a really nice house, and right next door his parents own a really nice house. How nice? Each property is appraised at around $1,000,000.

Interestingly, the website for the World Harvest Church, Parsley's church, is at whc.rodparsley.com. Rather emphasizes the idea of a cult of personality. (On the other hand, worldharvestchurch.org is taken by a church in Georgia, while worldharvestchurch.com is taken in Virginia.)

Our local public high school has its graduation every year at Parsley's World Harvest Church, because they have facilities large enough for everybody. They actually put on a very nice graduation, with all of their professional TV people providing large screen coverage. So, I have to grant him that.

Ahcuah, your taxes pay for so it should be nice.

Which of those two preachermen would be Hovind, and which of them Haggard, I can't decide...

Something's been bugging me about Parsley for quite some time now, and I've finally figured it out...

He looks exactly like Scott Thompson from "The Kids In the Hall."

Reed, you bring up a good point. Moderate (and of course those with a more leftward leaning) tend to disregard the very real danger that islam presents to western civilization because most of this information comes from the right wing - especially the wing nut right. And most of us try to be tolerant of other's cultures and ideas. I can go along with that as long as their cultures and ideas don't require the destruction of our own. Like the christians "great commission", islam has a great commission and is that all muslims must continue to struggle until all is allah's, until all religion is islam. Those that we think of as moderate muslims are those who don't follow true islamic teaching, and since the quran is held to be the exact, unchanging, unchangeable, direct word of allah, it is not open to interpretation as was the primarily human, but supposedly divinely guided, bible. Part of the global plan for islamization, is the imposition of sharia law over man's law. We are seeing constant attempts to insert sharia law into European countries and Canada. I see a lot of commenters on many rationlist blogs such as this one, PZ's blog and RD's blog, jump all over anyone who suggests that we need to look out for the very negative aspects of islam. The words "racist" and "bigot" are frequently tossed about. Islam is a religion, a culture, an ideology even. Muslims are the servants (slaves) of allah. Muslims are not a race; they are not even an ethnic group. So before people dismiss anyone who says anything negative about islam or muslims as right wing bigots, maybe ought to do some research on the real teaching of islam, which is at this time, unfortunately, found on right-wing blogs such a Jihad Watch, The Religion of Peace blog or Faith Freedom blog. There is a lot of right wing nonsense to be found there, but beneath it there is an element of truth and knowledge.

First, to set fire to their synagogues or schools and to bury and cover with dirt whatever will not burn, so that no man will ever again see a stone or cinder of them. This is to be done in honor of our Lord and of Christendom, so that God might see that we are Christians, and do not condone or knowingly tolerate such public lying, cursing, and blaspheming of his Son and of his Christians.

-- Martin Luther, On the Jews and Their Lies (1543)

What shall we Christians do with this rejected and condemned people, the Jews? Since they live among us, we dare not tolerate their conduct, now that we are aware of their lying and reviling and blaspheming. If we do, we become sharers in their lies, cursing and blasphemy. Thus we cannot extinguish the unquenchable fire of divine wrath, of which the prophets speak, nor can we convert the Jews. With prayer and the fear of God we must practice a sharp mercy to see whether we might save at least a few from the glowing flames.

-- Martin Luther, On the Jews and Their Lies (1543)

That would be the founder of Protestantism. All religions have their fundamentalists. You can object to enforcing anti-free-speech, anti-women laws without saying the whole religion is ominous.

Well, any more than most religions are ominous.

RedMann: ...the real teaching of islam, which is at this time, unfortunately, found on right-wing blogs such a Jihad Watch...

It wouldn't be hard to pull out excerpts from the Babble to show that Christians are hardwired for genocide too.

While the Quran is no less a work of fantasy than the Old & New Testaments, most Muslims are practically-minded enough not to interpet it in the bloody-minded way that seems to come so naturally to the US right wing. Just as most Jews & Christians can be lived with as neighbors by those who don't subscribe to every demand made in their holy writs, the great majority of Moslems are also reasonable humann beings and should be approached as such.

If only the same could be said about the majority of semi-fascists who swear by Fox, Limbaugh, Coulter, Pipes and the rest of those hatemongers.

Of course, the Rev Hagee is perfectly right about the Quran. And muslims who claim that their religion is a religion of peace are also quite correct.

Just as with the bible, the kind of muslim you are depends on which bits of the quran you like to read. Or more likely it's the other way around. Similarly, a christian who likes the sermon on the mount is a very different animal from one who spends their prayer time with their nose stuck in the book of revelation.

Hey, Ahcuah! My parents live about a mile from the oh-so-Reverend Rod, and I graduated (2002) from the local high school that holds graduation ceremonies in World Harvest Church.

So hi, neighbor!
