Mystery Volcano Photo #9: San Miguel, El Salvador

It took a few more guesses than some, but Boris Behncke correctly identified MVP#9 as San Miguel in El Salvador.

The current MVP standings:
volcanista - 1
Elizabeth - 1
Ralph - 1
gijs - 1
Anne - 1
Cam - 1
gg - 1
The Bobs - 1
Boris Behncke - 1

Still no repeat winners, making for a crowded platform at the top.

As for our MVP, San Miguel is one of the most active volcanoes in El Salvador. It has had half a dozen eruptions over the last 25 years, most recent producing a small (VEI 1) explosive eruption in 2002. Most eruptions fall into the VEI 1-2 range, with some lava flows and explosive products that have produced a beautifully symmetrical edifice for the volcano (see above). The volcano has shown some signs of seismic unrest during early 2009 but none of the seismicity has lead to signs of an imminent eruption.

We'll try again with a finding a good Mystery Volcano Photo! The last MVP was Mt. Meru in Tanzania, submitted by Michael Dalton-Smith. Now, I thought this image was going to be a little harder than it turned out to be as the shot of Meru on Wikipedia is a very similar shot, but that happens…
Maybe I should be pleased that in the last Mystery Volcano Photo took a whole five guesses rather than one or two, so I count it as success! The correct guess was made by Dr. Boris Behncke, so that elevates him into a tie for first. Current Standings: The Bobs - 3 Don Crain - 3 Boris Behncke - 3…
So, the field still stands unblemished, having identified all 8 MVPs, usually within less than 7 tries. Nice job! Current MVP Standings: volcanista - 1 Elizabeth - 1 Ralph - 1 gijs - 1 Anne - 1 Cam - 1 gg - 1 The Bobs - 1 MVP #7 was Arenal in Costa Rica. It was initially going to be Rincon de la…
It has been a slow week for volcano news (and a busy week for me), so I apologize for the abundance of MVPs this week. I've tried to find a good one in the many images submitted to me by Eruptions readers, and #15 is just one of those photos. If you have images you'd like to share with me for MVP…

i should probably just look it up on google earth, but what's that bigger caldera to the left of San Miguel?
