*ahem*

THIS IS JUST SO TYPICAL.

TYPICAL WHITE ELITIST D00D DOMINATION OF THE SCIENCES.

EUREKA JUST RELEASED THEIR TOP 30 SCIENCE BLOGS, AND ONLY 20% OF THEM ARE AUTHORED BY WOOMYN.

BUT GET THIS.

THERE IS ONLY ONE BLOG ON THE LIST WHERE THERE IS ONE PRIMARY AUTHOR WHO IS A WOOMYN. ITS AN ART BLOG.

THE OTHER '20%' ARE WOOMYN IN GROUPS. BECAUSE APPARENTLY SCIENCE IS LIKE GOING TO THE BATHROOM BY YOURSELF: ITS JUST TOO SCARY, SO WOOMYN HAVE TO DO IT IN GROUPS. OR ALTERNATIVELY, WE HAVE TO HAVE A BIG, STRONG MAN AS A CO-BLOGGER TO PROTECT US FROM EVIL SCARY STALKER SEXIST COMMENTORS.

SO NOT ONLY IS THIS LIST A REPRESENTATION OF HOW SEXIST THE SELECTION COMMITTEE WAS, BUT ALSO A REPRESENTATION OF HOW SCARY IT IS TO BE A WOOMYN SCIENCE BLOGGER!

HELP, HELP, IM BEING REPRESSED!

[/end scene]

Im sure this very serious post will be met with a chorus of support from The Usual Suspects. Oh wait, no it wont, cause The Colgate Twins are on the list (for their posts on kissing pussys, no doubt).

Also note, there were no virologists on the list.

Also note that this post is for lulz only. *HIGH-FIVE!* to my fellow SciBlings and thanks to the list makers for pointing me towards some neat blogs I didnt know existed :)

More like this

Continuing with the tradition from last two years, I will occasionally post interviews with some of the participants of the ScienceOnline2010 conference that was held in the Research Triangle Park, NC back in January. See all the interviews in this series here. You can check out previous years'…

I'm publicly responding to a particular reader's provocative comments because women-in-science is a topic that needs to be settled. Finally. After which, I'll be moving away from the great gender divide for a while and back to science and policy next week. Here goes. November 2, 2007 Hello there…

One of those blogs is a global warming denialist blog. And at least one commenter is calling for the addition of the other main AGW denialist blog.

One of the blogs on the list is written entirely by a woman as far as I can tell but the primary author off the blog is a man who seems to have stopped blogging a long time ago.

Also, my blog is not on that list so it is obviously invalid and stoopit.

Climate denialists on a list of "science" blogs? As for the lack of virologists - well, if you wasted less time in the lab and spent it here, there might well be one on the list. It's all your fault!

You know, come to think of it, if they include climate denialists, the evolution denialists should be calling for "equal time". Casey Luskin is just as deserving of inclusion in a list of science bloggers as is Anthony Watts. Or, better yet, given the gender imbalance, what about Denyse O'Leary? Equal Time for Denialists!

"Boobies fall off?" If it were so, I know a few who would consider it a bargain compared to surgery.

Tease.

I was shocked, frankly, to see Watt on the list.

Funny. I thought it was the hardworking women who saved the arses of their lazy, good-for-nothing male cobloggers.

As others have pointed out, Anthony Watts made the cut.

Irrelevant list is irrelevant.

By Tyler DiPietro (not verified) on 03 Feb 2010 #permalink

I love the word "woomyn".

Bad enough that they included Watts in a list of the best science bloggers, but they also called him a skeptic! Ugh! Someone needs to tell them that sticking your fingers in your ear and yelling "Nuh uh!" does not make you a skeptic!

Anthony Watts? Is this some kind of joke?

Re the Colgate Twins

A couple of announcements were made by Mooneytits over at their blog which might be of interest.

1. Mr. Mooney is going to replace D. J. Grothe at the POI podcast, along with two other individuals. I think that an interview with Mr. Mooney and Ms. Smith would provide much entertainment, if not enlightenment.

2. Ms. Kirshenbaum announced her engagement with a Dr. Lowery, a newly minted PhD at Duke Un. Congratulations are, perhaps, in order.

Oded-- The Usual Suspects have been completely silent on this issue. I can only assume that their silence is equal to acceptance, and they dont care at all about sexism in science/writing/blogging, they just bitch when their 'BFFs' are bawwing.

SLC--
1. I will happily agree to go on Mooneys show. I will then cancel the morning of the show for no apparent reason and leave him scrambling to find a new guest, just like Mooney did to Reggie.

2. Congratulations to Sheril for being heteronormative and for living in a culture that celebrates that, and only that, sexual lifestyle. Congrats on achieving social and legal rights others are forbidden from attaining.

HUZZAH!

;)

Re ERV

I will happily agree to go on Mooneys show. I will then cancel the morning of the show for no apparent reason and leave him scrambling to find a new guest,

1. Actually, that would be stooping to Mr. Mooneys' level of childishness. It would be more adult and productive to go on and give him a hard time. Ms. Smith might ask him why he chickened out on going on Reggies' podcast and why he has banned Ophelia Benson from commenting on his blog.

2. I wasn't aware that either Mr. Mooney or Ms. Kirshenbaum had expressed a negative opinion on same sex marriage (actually, Mr. Mooney got himself hitched up last summer). Maybe I'm missing something here.

2. I wasn't aware that either Mr. Mooney or Ms. Kirshenbaum had expressed a negative opinion on same sex marriage (actually, Mr. Mooney got himself hitched up last summer). Maybe I'm missing something here.

I assume Abby is parodying some of the stupid things that the local "clique" has read, with no justification whatsoever, into innocuous things that others have said and done.

"Congratulations to Sheril"

They are registered at Macy's.

Lennox with cartoon birds and a feather bed.

I smell a theme.

Dove release?

Feathered bridesmaid dresses?

Chicken dance?

Mooney in an ostrich costume?

Waddya wanna bet she is delaying publication of her moronic book so she can cram in a smoochy wedding photo.

I have to admit, at least in concept I used to think Sheril's smoochy book sounded kinda interesting. I like smooching. I like science. Science book about smooching? Yeah, I'll bite. You are culturally illiterate. You leech memes and mannerisms from my online culture, while knowing nothing *of* the culture. For real, it sounds like a FOX news anchor saying 'FO SHIZZLE, DUDE!' You sound like an idiot.

This isnt 'troll bait'. 'Troll bait' are the people who take the riders of the SciBlog Short Bus seriously and think they can engage in normal conversation with you people, assisting you on the path to non-idiocy. This is not possible, as you are just trolls.

An example of 'troll bait' would be, oh, I dunno, John Wilkins.

What *I* was doing was pretending to hold a view I clearly do not agree with to initiate discussion. Some would call it satire. We call it trolling trolls.

I anticipated two outcomes. Either 'lulz' (eg, Dr. Is-is Dum-dum or you white knighting Sheril and totally missing the point for the millionth time, and we can all laugh at how stupid you all are, again), or 'great justice' (eg, ZuskAIDS recognizes that her behavior is hypocritical, curiously selective, and unhelpful, and agrees to be more conscious of those biases in the future).

These are issues my culture has to deal with on a regular basis. For instance, a regular commentor, a Creationist, unknowingly recorded a conversation he and I were having and put it up on the internet. I had two options. Get butthurt (OMFG I FEEL VIOLATED I CANT BELIEVE HE DID DAT OMFGWARBLEGARBLE CREATIONISTS HAVE NO MORALS BAAAAAAW SEXIST RACIST NAZI!), or recognize that being butthurt would be hypocritical, as I loled when people recorded Sally Kern without her knowledge. I recognized my hypocrisy and I got better.

So, this was an opportunity to right some wrongs.

But you all didnt.

So Im not 'sniveling', CP. Im disappointed in you people and your behavior. Like always.

Congrats on achieving social and legal rights others are forbidden from attaining.

I eagerly await the day when Muslims and polygamist Mormons receive their religious freedom to marry the number of women to which their religions entitle them. As the law stands now, Christians are free to practice the monogamy dictated by their religion, but those of other faiths, or no faith, are not.

And what's this nonsense about consanguinity? People's rights to marry the ones they love are at stake, are they not?

Even the Taliban allowed multiple wives and cousin marriage. Sad that America can't live up to even such a low bar.

It is unacceptable, a violation of human rights, if consenting adults cannot marry when they are in love.

By Gabriel Hanna (not verified) on 04 Feb 2010 #permalink

More human rights violated:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/6424937.stm

Incest is a criminal offence in Germany. Patrick Stuebing has already served a two-year sentence for committing incest and there is another jail term looming if paragraph 173 of the legal code is not overturned.

The couple's lawyer, Endrik Wilhelm, has lodged an appeal with Germany's highest judicial body, the federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe, in order to overturn the country's ban on incest.

"Under Germany's criminal code, which dates back to 1871, it is a crime for close relatives to have sex and it's punishable by up to three years in prison. This law is out of date and it breaches the couple's civil rights," Dr Wilhelm said.

"Why are disabled parents allowed to have children, or people with hereditary diseases or women over 40? No-one says that is a crime.

"This couple are not harming anyone. It is discrimination. And besides, we must not forget that every child is so valuable," said Dr Wilhelm.

Did you or did you not come to my blog and use the phrase 'troll bait' improperly? Certainly using words incorrectly could be a form of commentary or a joke, but you didnt do that. You were just using the wrong word like a moron.

You do this regularly-- using the words of a culture you dont understand in an apparent attempt to look 'hip' and culturally relevant, but to people in this culture you look like a fool.

Insider jargon and non-standard grammar and orthography do not comprise a "culture".
1337 and 4chan are absolutely cultures. Do you think Yiddish is 'insider jargon'? Ebonics? Cajun?

No. CP is an online persona created by some random Anon. I dont believe CP has any wishes/desires/emotions of its own. It is not a sentient being any more than a remote controlled car.

You do this regularly-- using the words of a culture you dont understand in an apparent attempt to look 'hip' and culturally relevant, but to people in this culture you look like a fool.

On what basis do you conclude that my motivation for using certain words is an "apparent attempt to look 'hip' and culturally relevant"? Have you considered alternative hypotheses, like any good scientist would?

erv, it looks like you're the troll bait atm. CPP only does 2 things: white knight and troll. And he's not white-knighting at the moment.

I've yet to find the culture which, as a rule, does.

Speaking of Mooneytits, is Ms. Smith going to comment on Mr. Mooneys' latest appeasement advice as to how to deal with anti-vaxers? Lots of good ammunition there. Dr. Orac and Jerry Coyne have already weighed in on the subject.

http://www.scienceprogress.org/2010/02/vaccine-saga/

Since I'm in a generous mood I'll help you out. Have any of you considered the hypothesis that Comrade PhysioProf uses certain of the verbal tics that you consider part of your "culture" because it makes him and many of the people he is addressing laugh their fucking asses off? And that we are laughing our asses off at you and your "culture", but in a more or less kind and loving way, sort of like how you might laugh your ass off at a toddler who runs headlong into wall, but bounces off mostly unhurt and keeps going.

Jesus Christ, CP, I've seen people pull that move a million times when they face rejection by the culture they want to be accepted in: turn around and snivel, "OH YEAH??? WELL x (e.g., hardcore punk) SUCKS ANYWAY AND I'M JUST LAUGHING AT YOU!" This is typically the route taken in the embryonic stages of becoming an emofag.

I think we need a cultural anthropologist to weigh in on whether and how l33t is a "culture".

I'm not a cultural anthropologist, although like most anthropologists I have "4 field training" and I actually have done ethnographic field work and am currently teaching a class on related topics. So I am fully qualified to weigh in on the question in this context where everybody else is light years behind me in thinking about this sort of thing. (Add in the Harvard degrees and, well ...)

So I'll start the process. But first I must learn the language and establish relationships with a couple informants.

O.o To which?

I learned Yiddish (aka "Hebronics") at Yale. I mean that place was like one giant Jewfest. I can say that because my mom was Jewish, although I don't practice and my dad was a Christian. I consider myself a bit more of a Jew-for-Jesus I guess. Shit I even eat bacon.

Looking at the culture of my institution through the eyes of my anthro minor (although shit, that was back in the 60s and we were still trying to cope with letting chicks in as undergrads), I'd have to say l33t qualifies as much as being Jewcy did at Yale in the 60's (provided you didn't have tits). Look at the role of imitation on the internet, in light of symbolic cognition. For example ERV does a very passable job of copying PZ Meyers's religious angst, and it has definitely helped her build her own community on her blog.

By Kobayashi Maru (not verified) on 06 Feb 2010 #permalink

Right, Kobayashi Maru. Because Abbie couldn't possibly have her own religious angst or opinions or history with Mooney. She MUST just be copying PZ.

I don't quite get what you're getting at with your reminiscences about being at Yale in the 60's, possibly because I wasn't even a sperm in the 60's and don't give a shit, so I will offer a more relevant anecdote. I read this blog because a)Abbie is shit-hot at virology, b)she explains it in LOLspeak, and that's about the only speed at which I can catch it, and c) she's funny. When I feel like reading Pharyngula I read Pharyngula. YMMV. It's a big Internet and if you don't like this blog (or find it derivative) there are a lot of other places to go.

I wasted a lot of time on 4chan. It isn't a culture. It is a constantly changing mix of people. You can post the same thing over and over and have it be massively popular or rejected and ridiculed instantly depending on who sees it first. The only real consistent pattern I can seem to come up with is that a lot of people like to ruin things, and it is either good (scientology) or bad (random teenage girls, the families of dead kids) depending on the flow of random folks I mentioned before. Oh yeah, and how hating women and blacks is friggin LOLZHILARIOUS. You can bet something about watermelon/chicken will get photoshopped or posted in reply to anything featuring a black person, and violent misognist pornography/rape for posts about women. If it is a culture, asking people to respect or care enough to understand it is SILLY.

People don't sound dumb when they misuse memes from 4chan or anywhere else (other chans, sa, fark, ytmnd, etc). There are whole wikis to keep track of all the stupid crap that comes out every other day, and you have to pay way too much attention to know what anyone is talking about. A fair amount of it really is nonsense that gets passed around (raptorjesus! frosted butts!).

Greg- encyclopedia dramatica is the wiki for this kind of thing. informants are just going to screw with you, or not know what the hell they are talking about.

If it is a culture, asking people to respect or care enough to understand it is SILLY.

Indeed, it's serious business.

People don't sound dumb when they misuse memes from 4chan or anywhere else (other chans, sa, fark, ytmnd, etc).

People sound dumb both when they use and misuse them (see above), but more so when they misuse them because of the level of fail and newfaggotry it entails.
