8 Things meme

We have to do this, apparently, or the chain will be broken and ill fortune will follow...

First, the Rules:

1. We have to post these rules before we give you the facts.

2. Players start with eight random facts/habits about themselves.

Nothing about mentioning Fight Club...

So:

1. I am soppy and sentimental - my music consists of Peter Gabriel and Tom Waits.

2. I do not eat anything that wears its skeleton on the outside (shellfish, crustaceans, etc.). Mild stomach upsets follow, but of course I justify this religiously.

3. I crushed my left foot in a motorcycle accident 25 years ago. It has hurt severely every day since.

4. I still ride a motorcycle (Suzuki 1200 GSF Bandit), which tells you a lot about my intelligence.

5. I had the only case of a basal (or was it squamous?) cell carcinoma in a finger that the Peter McCallum Cancer Institute in Melbourne had ever encountered. I had my left index finger amputated about 5 years ago because of it. It was caused by a periungal infection of a papilloma virus, which also causes cervical cancer, but you'll be relieved to hear my cervix is as it should be.

6. I do not touch type. I have to look at the keyboard occasionally, not the screen. I [auto]learned to type on an IBM Composer, which had no screen, and so I keep a mental line composer in my head.

7. I have lived in over 90 houses. Some for only a few days, of course. I also slept on a beach for a fortnight once, when homeless.

8. I have met several famous people: Cliff Richards and Billy Connolly being two of those well known outside philosophy or theology. The most impressive person I ever met was Janai Luwum, the Ugandan Anglican Archbishop under Amin's reign, who went back to his parish from Australia to certain death; at, it transpired, Amin's own hand. The antiwar war hero David Hackworth was almost as impressive. He told me he heard President Johnson say to his chiefs of staff to nuke north Vietnam so "I won't be the only American President to lose a war". Of the people I have worked for, the most impressive is Gus Nossal, who managed to be a front rank scientist while also being a people person extraordinairre. Gus remembers everybody.
