Marcel Marceau passes away, quietly

It is unclear if he had any last words.

I don't know why I find this woman so fascinating. She's a living train wreck and I just can't stop watching. In her latest crazy move, she's once again claiming the support of prominent politicians that don't support her. Last week, Jeb Bush did a "unity tour" with Republican office seekers in…
Someone writes: TO List Supervisor, Prof. Volokh: Mendacious, Fabrication, Falsity, Untrue. These words used by Mr. Lambert to describe Mr. Kates's arguments. Is it permissible to call a list member a liar if you use a thesaurus? No. The only people you are allowed to call liars are those not in…
Imre Salusinszky in a column in the The Australian declares that global warming is dead because: last year was the coldest year since 2001. Apparently he doesn't read The Australian which just five days earlier reported: "2010 warmest year on record". Salusinszky's logic is this: According to the…
The defective refutations of the Lancet study just keep on coming. First, we have Gerard Alexander writing in the Weekly standard: But the study's researchers were sure to survey in Falluja, far and away the most violent city in post-invasion Iraq. Falluja turned out to be such…

How sad. I was at the performance at which Marceau for the very first time (in his account, anyway) spoke aloud on stage about his work, still in makeup (as Bip, of course) immediately after his performance. He was thoughtful and articulate about his work, and as I learned later that evening at the green room reception for him, a gracious and shy man in the face of too much adulation.

Did he leave any parting gestures?

A human life ends and you people crack jokes?

Hey Jonathan, take it easy... He had a long life, in which he made us laugh. I'm sure he'd be happy to see that people remember him with laughter, even when saying farewell.

I can't help but remember a movie by Mel Brooks, a silent movie, which was about the efforts of Brooks to make a silent movie. When he phoned Marceau to convince him to join, Marceau said "No"... which was the only spoken word of the whole movie :-)

> a silent movie

It was called "Silent Movie", if I remember correctly.

In the face of death, and one after a long and productive life, humour is not unwarranted. This death is not a tragedy, just the passing of time. I'm sure he'd appreciate it (although I suspect he'd heard all those jokes before, with the possible exception of the one in comment #2).

No, we pay respect to a great artist by acknowledging the joy that he brought to all of us in his remarkable life, few human beings have done more

An invisible coffin, no doubt...
