Bangladesh no longer the most corrupt country!

Bangladesh is no longer the most corrupt country in the world!!!. Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, Guinea, Iraq, Myanmar and Haiti are tops. Boy, and I am proud to be an American, after all, we helped Iraq attain the status of being the 3rd most corrupt nation in the world! Seeing as how millions have died in the Congo since 1996, methinks we need another intervention, and perhaps we help Congo ascend the ranks a bit? Who knows, can't you imagine a scenario 5 years down the road when Americans troops have to stand down and call off a search for their cannibalized comrades so that our puppet "president" could get some "creds" from the rebel leaders he had to placate?

Also, here are the least corrupt nations:

Finland
Iceland
New Zeland
Denmark
Singapore
Sweden
Switzerland
Norway
Australia
The Netherlands

Hm...me thinks there is a Eurocentric bias here, no? What must be white is right!

First, a little Benazir Bhutto story, since we are on the subject of women leaders. A friend of mine was to be on the podium of Harvard's graduation the year Benazir Bhutto was to give the keynote, and heard this conversation. John Galbraith, the economists who was also a professor at Harvard,…
John over at Stranger Fruit has posted an infogram from Science, which ranks 34 countries acceptance of evolution. I have hijacked it below: John notes that only Turkey has beaten us in evolutionary ignornace. But I immediately was struck by how similar this list looks to one I posted about last…
The World Values Survey has a question about immigration policy with four options: - Let anyone come - As long as jobs available - Strict limits - Prohibit people from coming I used WVS 2005-2008 from 57 countries first. Then I filled out the countries with the Four-wave Aggregate of the Values…
Thanks to Scienceblogs, I have access to Google Analytics for my blog, which means I can obsess over a wealth of information and statistics. It's amazing what Google knows about my blog. Let's hope Google always and only decides to use its power for good... Anyhoo, one of the things I can look at…

Looks to me like the 'least corrupt' list is to some degree a list of states with economically authoritarian governments, where abuse of power is institutionalized in the law instead of being in the hands of law-breaking individuals. I can't believe anyone could shop for groceries in Denmark, for instance, without thinking that there's something rotten about the pricing and selection.

Agree with mjb, Singapore is the prime model for how a government can "lawfully" abuse power.

And the Finnish are simply occupied with imbibing so much "Pohjan Poika 59" that they either don't notice the corruption or they're not in any condition to be corrupt (or both)! ;)

Relativity and definition of corruption are the keys here. In the middle-east, corruption has nothing to do with money hanling but with social behavioural expectations (in a country with no tax, public servant do have to round up their income, don't they?). Lobbiing laws in the US would send most lobbies and politicians in jail by european standards. And the global situation with poverty increasing in spite of best-ever economical performances looks like plain corruption to me.
Abuse of power institutionalized? Gee, no need to notice you write this with a z instead of s to I know where you are from, hey!
