I've been away from the computer a fair amount the past few days. In any case, my RSS is saturated with posts about this new Star Trek movie, which I haven't seen. Either it must be good, or I read the blogs of other nerds. Or, perhaps both.

For once, I actually managed not to miss it. For once, this day hasn't passed me by, leaving me not to remember its significance for a couple of days.
For once, I haven't forgotten my blogiversary.
Yes, as hard as it is to believe, I've been at this more or less nonstop just as long as a…
I posted what was to be the last post on this blog yesterday. This morning, in clearing out archives (of stuff that originally appeared on the original site), I accidentally cleared out the most recent 25 posts instead of post 796-821. (Don't ask.)
I'll restore the other 23, maybe, at least to one…
Trying to describe the experience of Science Online to someone who has never been is like trying to explain the taste of a pineapple. You can get vague details across - tangy, sweet, juicy - but the full experience can never be imparted verbally. I'm not even going to try to explain what it was…
Neil deGrasse Tyson's TV talk show had its debut Monday night on the National Geographic channel, something that's very relevant to my interests. It airs after I go to bed, though, so I set the DVR to record it, and watched it Tuesday afternoon. Then I was too busy yesterday to write about it...…
IMDB.com is giving it an average rating of 8.4/10 from 3,939 votes. Intersubjective opinion currently dictates it is indeed a great film, unless your a female over the age of 45 in which case it is only a rather average film.
It's a "time travel changes all of history so now we have excuses to ignore everything that happened before" story.
That puts serious limits on how interested I can be. I have to face facts: Star Trek has become nothing but a cash cow.
probably both. It was a good movie. I saw it at a local drive-in (yes they still have those) with the wife and 2 grandkids and several van loads full of families parked next to us. The movie has cross-generational appeal. It satisfied trek fans but still appealed to kids who had never watched any trek shows.
This was my first Star Trek movie. It was funnier than I expected. And I liked Kirk's swagger.
WARNING: If you haven't seen the new Star Trek movie yet, and don't want to know anything about it, then don't read my comment.
As a movie on it's own (not considering it being part of the Star Trek universe) it was OK. I was entertained. It's the type of movie I could watch once, but probably not want to watch again. (Although if I were channel-surfing and it was on TV, and I didn't have anything to watch, I'd probably stop flicking channels there.)
But as a movie that's part of the Star Trek universe, my initial reaction is... ... ... WTF!?!?!?!?
I didn't feel like a Star Trek movie.
And not only did the characters not feel like characters in the original series (even accounting for them being younger), but the acting was horrible IMO.
What it really reminded me of was this one joke scene on Stargate SG-1 where the SG-1 team gets "played" by a late teens and early 20s group of people: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwyIMzfzz8o
Also, before seeing it, I heard people claim that it had been "dumbed down". Having seen it now, I can't disagree with that.
