I've actually done this. It was part of our shop class in Jr. High. We didn't make pencil holders, but rather, some kind of candle holder thingie.

Use glasses to protect your eyes when doing this, please (take it from a stained glass artist!). And file the edges, or someone will get a nasty surprise reaching in to grab a toothbrush one morning pre-coffee.
