Texas Teacher suspended for being "Liberal" and an "atheist"

For the past few days I have been in contact with Mr. Richard Mullens a school teacher in Brookeland Tx. Brookeland Tx, is an incredibly "Conservative" area of Texas, and only 16 miles up the road from Jasper Tx. the scene of several incidents of racial violence and murder. Mullens has been the victim of a smear campaign and a slew of unethical practices, based solely on his religious and political beliefs. I have received numerous calls today from area parents, and concerned local residents who feel that Mr. Mullens is a good teacher, who has encouraged and inspired his students to think critically, and independently and is innocent of all charges, both spoken and written. In fact the administration of Brookeland High School made attempts to urge students to sign a list of alleged chargers against Mr. Mullens of which over 100 students out of 103 refused to sign....

And so on and so forth. This is rather incredible. Have a look at the details here.

I was all prepared to criticize a young atheist who refused to read the bible as literature in an English class. Newton South High School officials dropped a requirement to read excerpts from the Bible for one student last month, after he refused to read the Biblical passages as a literature…
Just ask Richard Mullens, who has not said he is an atheist, but was suspected of being one…and lost his job as a teacher for that reason. Then on January 7th, a student in my classroom in second period left my class, went to the Principal's office, and told him that there was an inappropriate…
As cynical as I am about politics, and as convinced as I am that nearly all politicians think the world revolves around them, I'm still just astonished at the sheer chutzpah of what Rep. Tom Delay, the Republican leader, said to a prominent religious right group on Friday: On Friday, as the…

"Mr. Mullens is a good teacher, who has encouraged and inspired his students to think critically"

That pretty much sums up why he's som dangerous.

When I first read this over by, I sent the link to the barack obama mailing list as they still sending stuff out even tho they have a new address whitehouse.gov
Part of why this teacher's in trouble is that he corrected myths about obama being a muslin.
You'd think the administration would realise that when they speak of faith-based initiatives, we see this.

Um - unless your name is also Brad Watkins, you might want to indicate that that's a quote..

Oh man I just read that. You guys live in a strange and scary country. I'm glad you don't have a nutbar for a President anymore--but to think that this can happen in this day and age. It reminds me of late 19th c Russia where people were still being tried as witches. And I thought that was a pretty strange place. So this is the context for the atheist-religion thing that goes on so often in the science blogs? I can't imagine this happening in Canada. The uproar it would cause.

I wish him luck. However he's better off teaching in a more rational area for his own sanity.

Um, in my country people are still being burned and stoned to death for witchcraft even today.
