An outstanding example of Authority, Conspiracy Theory, and Confirmation Bias

Former USGS geologist Jim Berkland links tides, whale beaching, magnetic fields, lunar cycles, earthquakes, and stuff to predict that there will be a major earthquake on the North American west coast between March 19th and March 26th.

The following video is rather mixed up but it will amuse you:

Obviously Jim Berkland is a kook. Probably.

Unless, of course, his prediction comes true. Then, I'll look at his tide - magnetic field - homing pigeon connection more closely.

A 6.3 earthquake has just struck the city of Christchurch, New Zealand, killing dozens and leaving dozens more buried in rubble with rescue workers trying to dig them out. On the TV this morning, the mayor of Christchurch told his story: Having just left a series of meetings, he was sitting on a…
Great disasters are great stories, great moments in time, great tests of technology, humanity, society, government, and luck. Fifty years ago it was probably true to say that our understanding of great disasters was thin, not well developed because of the relative infrequency of the events, and…
There's one piece of bad math that I've encountered relatively frequently in conversations. It's incredibly frustrating to me, because it's just so crazy - but the way we teach math and physics, far to many people just don't have enough of a clue to see how foolish it really is. This comes up…

Greg,

What does Berkland's ramblings have to do with him making a meal? I think you mean kook not cook.

Jim Berkland is quite a character. His greatest geological discovery, actually published in Science many years ago, was glacial striations on Grandfather Mountain NC, way south of any previously known glaciation in Eastern North America.
Unfortunately, it was soon found that the striations didn't line up with the direction ice would flow but instead were radial to the site of masts to which logs were dragged by steel chains during lumbering operations.

But Cavuto said he was a "pretty good geologist." It's on Fox News!

San Francisco has major quakes in March and October. March? NCAA Basketball Championships ... October? Baseball playoffs and World Series... Basketballs are round, baseballs are round, the earth is round... must be a connection!

@ Vic
If you'll notice, the Ring of Fire displayed in the video CLEARLY follows the seam of a baseball. Your basketball theory is retarded. The baseball one however....Nobel Prize material.
