"One cannot have too many good bird books"
--Ralph Hoffmann, Birds of the Pacific States (1927).
The Birdbooker Report is a special weekly report of a wide variety of science, nature and behavior books that currently are, or soon will be available for purchase. This report is written by one of my Seattle birding pals and book collector, Ian "Birdbooker" Paulsen, and is edited by me and published here for your information and enjoyment. Below the fold is this week's issue of The Birdbooker Report which lists ecology, environment, natural history and bird books that are (or will soon be) available for purchase.
New and Recent Titles:
- Keller, Geoffrey A. and Gerrit Vyn. Birds Songs of the Pacific Northwest. 2008. Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. 5 CDs and booklet. ABA Price: $38.95 U.S. SUMMARY: This is the most comprehensive compilation of Pacific Northwest bird sounds ever assembled. These CDs feature the vocalizations of 316 bird species found in the region. Also included are regional song dialects. Every birder in the region will want a set of these CDs! GrrlScientist comment: I own nearly every birdsong CD ever published, and (up until now, anyway), I did own every birdsong CD for the PNW. I'd sure like to add this one to my collection, especially since my knowledge of the birds and their songs of the PNW is fairly extensive.
- Robson, Craig. A Field Guide to the Birds of South-East Asia. 2008. New Holland Publishers. Hardbound: 544 pages. Price: GBP 35.00 (about $51.53 U.S.). [Amazon: £24.50]. SUMMARY: This fully updated edition of the award-winning "A Field Guide to the Birds of South-East Asia" includes more than 20 new species for the region which are recent discoveries, taxonomic 'splits' or have been recorded there for the first time. It now includes 120 gorgeous color plates and covers 1,327 bird species for the birds of Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Peninsular Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), Laos and Cambodia. Despite lacking range maps, birders will find this book very useful!

Books to the ceiling,
Books to the sky,
My pile of books is a mile high.
How I love them! How I need them!
I'll have a long beard by the time I read them.
