You mention your desire to have more field experience. You are thinking right! One possibility is that various geological organizations put out field trip guides. Some of these are drive down the road and stop at the road cuts type trips which you could do on your own. Your state geological survey, state geological organization, state academy of science, university geology departments, etc. would be the place to look. Audbon Society or Sierra Club might have something similar.
