Good Science Movies

Our Benevolent Seed Overlords ask:

What movie do you think does something admirable (though not necessarily accurate) regarding science? Bonus points for answering whether the chosen movie is any good generally....

Here's my list (which I might update):

1) Apollo 13. The heroes aren't the big, famous stars. The heros are the nerds. They don't beat someone up to save the day, or roar in inchoate rage like Mel Gibson, they use reason and logic to solve the problem.
2) From The Earth to the Moon (#15). It's not technically a movie, but it shows how the Apollo astronauts were taught to be geologists.
3) GATTACA. The first and last fifteen minutes are superb. A good film about genetic determinism (and a beautiful set too).

Now if only someone would make a movie version of Arrowsmith...

Everyone knows that the number of pages per book in the famous series by J.K. Rowlings increased over time, but was this increase steady? Was it consistent? The answer seems to be no.
Joe Carter has a post where he lists the 100 most overrated and underrated movies of all time, by arbitrary category.
Back in May, we here at ScienceBlogs got an offer to get an advance screener copy of Randy Olson's new movie, "Sizzle", if we promised to review it.

There was a 1931 film of "Arrowsmith" with Sidney Howard, directed by John Ford, most famous later for some of Hollywood's greatest Westerns. I think it's available on VHS, if not DVD.

And apparently a Czech miniseries as well, a few years ago.

Thank you, Internet Movie Database.
